Watertown High School’s girls basketball team will play in the MIAA Div. 2 State Final on Saturday, and you can book your ticket now.

Traditionally the basketball state finals have been played in Worcester at the DCU Center, but the MIAA basketball committee decided to change things up and move it to the birthplace of basketball – Springfield, said Watertown High School Athletic Director Mike Lahiff, who is chairman of the MIAA basketball committee. “It is a trial for the first year, an experiment to see if people feel like it is a nice thing to do,” Lahiff said.

Fourth Quarter Surge Propels Watertown into Girls Basketball State Final

BOSTON – When Oliver Ames took a one point lead over Watertown into the fourth quarter it looked like Tuesday’s Div. 2 girls baskebtall state semifinal would be a nail biter. The Raiders had other ideas, however, and celebrated the 48-34 win on the floor of the TD Garden. Watertown survived a slow start when the Raiders missed some “bunnies,” as Head Coach Patrick Ferdinand described them. They also dealt with the loss of senior guard Nicole Lanzo, who hurt her knee just minutes into the game.

Follow Watertown Girls Basketball Live From the Garden in the State Semi

For the second year in a row, the Watertown High School girls basketball team will play under the bright lights of the TD Garden, but they face a team that has been there a few times themselves. 

The Raiders (20-3) hope the second time is a charm in the state semifinal (a.k.a. the EMass final). “We went last year,” said Watertown junior center Shannon Murphy. “We lost to Duxbury last year, so we are very excited to go back.” The South Section Champions Oliver Ames (21-3) has won two state championships (2006 and 2010) under head coach Elaine Clement-Holbrook, who has 645 wins in her 40 seasons at the Easton campus. Watertown Hockey Team’s Dream of a Repeat Ends With Overtime Loss

WOBURN – The magical state tournament run has finally come to an end for the Watertown High School boys hockey team, which fell 2-1 in overtime to Wayland in the div. 3 North Section final Monday night. 

The Raiders won the 2015 Div. 3 State Championship, and again seemed to have the skill and luck to make another run to the TD Garden. Watertown Head Coach Mike Hayes had faith in his team’s abilities, despite finishing the regular season with a 9-11 record. “I really did, I thought we had enough to get back in the tournament and make a run,” said Hayes, noting that the team won nine straight tournament games.

Watertown Faces Familiar Tourney Foe in North Section Hockey Final

Watertown and Wayland have been familiar foes in the Div. 3 North Section boys hockey tournament, and the teams face off again Monday night for the Section Title. 

The game will be a rubber match, of sorts, with the teams splitting the last two tourney match ups. In 2014, Wayland prevailed in overtime over the Raiders in the section semifinal. Last year, again in the section semis, Watertown got revenge by beating the Warriors 4-1 on the way to winning the Raiders’ first boys hockey state championship. The teams will be at it again Monday at Woburn’s O’Brien Rink at 7 p.m.

Looking at the brackets, neither team was expected to make it this deep into the tournament.

Watertown Girls Basketball Vanquishes Rivals, Garden Bound Once More

WOBURN – Facing a fired up rival and a raucous crowd, the Watertown girls basketball team battled back from a halftime deficit and defeated Belmont 46-41 to claim the Div. 2 North Section title and book a trip to the TD Garden for the second straight year. 

In the first half of the game played at Woburn High School, the Marauders’ (14-10) pressure defense had the Raiders (20-3) off their game and the teams headed to halftime with Belmont leading 26-21. Watertown Head Coach Patrick Ferdinand told his team to remember how they prepared for the game. “It was really about digging in and communicating defensively and being physical,” Ferdinand said. “(Belmont) did a good job early hitting stuff early on but I think we had to stay true to  what we were doing and stay in it.

Watertown, Belmont Clash With Trip to the Garden on the Line

A Watertown-Belmont matchup is always an emotional affair, but Saturday night’s girls basketball game between the rivals has huge implications. To the victor goes the North Section Championship trophy and a trip to the EMass finals at the TD Garden. The North Section final has become a familiar place for the Raiders, who have reached the game for the fourth straight year. This will be Belmont’s first in recent memory. Most years, the section final is held at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, but with the arena unavailable the game will be played at Woburn High School at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Shootout Win Propels Watertown Hockey into North Section Final

BILLERICA – Watertown faced a tough test in the Div. 3 North Section boys hockey semifinal with two of its top-line players sporting 100 degree fevers, but the pair scored big goals when the game was on the line. Following a back and forth game that ended 4-4 after two overtimes, Watertown won the 2-1 in a shootout over Shawsheen Tech at the Chelmsford Forum in Billerica. Raiders head coach Mike Hayes is used to dealing with a small roster, but his team limped into the Div. 3 North Section semifinal against Shawsheen Tech with seniors Tyler Poulin and Mike Giordano both suffering fevers.
