On Saturday at 11 a.m., Watertown High School seeks to complete an seven-peat – seven straight state titles when they play Auburn in a battle of undefeated teams in the State Final. The late November date with Auburn at WPI is becoming a tradition. This is the third straight year the teams will play in the MIAA Div. 2 Field Hockey State Final. Watertown, of course, won the last two meetings.
Led by two goals from senior co-captain Ally McCall, the Watertown field hockey team is headed back to Worcester for an eighth straight state final after beating Hanover Tuesday night. The Raiders (21-0) struggled to find the back of the net in the first half of the state semifinal played on a frigid night at Canton High School. Hanover came in undefeated at 19-0-3 and posed a tough opponent, said Watertown Head Coach Eileen Donahue. “This was a tough game. it was a very physical type of game,” Donahue said.
On a day where the wind chill dipped temperatures into the 30s and snowflakes could be seen, the Watertown High School field hockey team came out red hot – defeating Manchester-Essex 4-0 for the MIAA Div. 2 North Section championship. The matchup was billed as a tough one for the seven-time defending state champs – and a threat to the team’s record unbeaten streak. The Hornets (17-2-2) came off wins of 5-0 and 3-1 behind the goal scoring of Robert Carter (yes, a boy on the girls’ field hockey team). Just four minutes into the game at North Andover High School, however, Watertown sophomore Sydney Poulin jumped on a ball that popped in the air, and batted it down into the Manchester-Essex net.
STONEHAM – The Raiders valiantly tried to catch up to Stoneham after falling behind in the first half, but could not overcome the Spartans in the battle for the Div. 4 North Section football title, Friday night. Watertown had beat Stoneham at Victory Field last month, but the second time was not the charm. A potent Spartan running attack and errors by the Raiders proved costly. The Raiders found themselves down 20-0 late in the first half after a 53-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Cann to Tim Russell, a fumble returned 22-yards for a score by Shane Collins and a long drive ending in a 4-yard touchdown run by Evan Taylor.
The Raiders take on Stoneham Friday night in the Div. 4 North Section final beginning at 7 p.m.
The Middlesex League foes played three weeks ago at Victory Field and Watertown came out on top 21-14. The win and a better record, however, did not guarantee the Raiders (6-3) a better seed than the Spartans (5-4). Both teams had some upsets along the way, but with the fifth seed, Stoneham got to host the section final. Watertown has been lead by junior quarterback Deon Smith, who has scored numerous time on the ground, and added more touchdowns through the air.
The Watertown High School field hockey team will take on a tough Manchester-Essex team in the Section final on Saturday, a team whose star player is a boy.
On a drizzly Wednesday night, the Raiders (19-0) won 2-0 over Weston (14-4-3) in the MIAA Div. 2 North Section semifinal at Reading Memorial High School. Christa Knell scored in the first half on a pass from Michaela Antonellis to put Watertown on top. Weston kept the game close until the last minute of the game when Gabby Venezia scored to make it 2-0 Raiders. Saturday, Watertown will take on Manchester-Essex, a team that has rolled through the playoffs thanks to the help of Robert Carter, a boy playing for the Hornets.
Quarterback Deon Smith led Watertown to a 31-7 romp over North Reading in Friday night’s Div. 4 North Section semifinal. Smith scored the sixth-seeded Raiders’ first three touchdowns in the game played at second seeded North Reading (7-2). First the junior ripped off a 66-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. North Reading answered when Matt McCarthy got a 61-yard TD run of his own.
The post season begins this week for the streaking Watertown field hockey team, which seeks an eighth straight State Championship. Coach Eileen Donahue’s squad has not been beaten in 155 games and set a new national record. The streak includes a perfect 17-0 in 2015. Top seeded Watertown will have a first round bye, and then hosts with winner of the game between eight-seed Wilmington (10-6-2) and nine-seed Wayland (8-5-3). The MIAA Div.
