Watertown recently received approval for a Cultural District in Watertown Square. The public is invited to a celebration of the new cultural district on May 21. In celebration of Watertown’s recent Cultural District designation there will be an after-hours event on Wednesday, May 21, at Bar ‘Cino, 47 Main St. in Watertown.

The Commander’s Mansion hosted a sold out Empowering Women in Leadership event on March 19, with panels made up of business owners, a non-profit director, and members of the City of Watertown administration. The event was the first hosted by the City of Watertown’s Events Team and co-sponsored by the City of Watertown and the Watertown Business Coalition. The first panel featured Roberta Miller, Interim Executive Director, Mosesian Center for the Arts; Ariel Nathanson, founder of Finances for Feminists; and Jan Taylor, owner of Get Lively Health & Fitness Studio, who also is the Development Director for New Art Center in Newton. They spoke about the importance of finding allies and learning from them, collaborating with other business owners, and the importance of learning about finances.

Watertown’s economic prospects remain promising, despite a downturn in life sciences and uncertainty in future funds from Washington, City Manager George Proakis said during his City Update at an event hosted by the Watertown Business Coalition on Tuesday. During the event at the Hampton Inn & Suites, he also spoke about the possible reuse of the former Police Station property, how the new Cultural District could help the local economy, and the redevelopment of Watertown Square. While the lab boom of the early 2020s has waned, Proakis said that the industry still remains solid. “We have 4 million square feet of lab space now, and while vacancies are currently high, indicators are the industry is still growing, with job growth outpacing layoffs, and I think that last thing that is the key is the industry built very aggressively in the lab field of the last couple of years,” Proakis said.
City Manager George Proakis will be providing a City Update at an event hosted by the Watertown Business Coalition at the Hampton Inn & Suites on Tuesday, March 11, at 8 a.m.
George will provide the most up-to-date information about the City’s priorities for the year to come. There will also be time to network with people from local businesses, non-profits, and more. The event is free and open to WBC members, Watertown residents, and those who work and do business in Watertown.This event will not be live streamed.
