Artists Featured in Watertown’s Edible Plants Exhibit to Discuss Their Work

The Public Arts & Culture Committee announced it will host a Panel Discussion with the artists of Edible Plants 2023 exhibition on the evening of Nov. 29. The discussion will be held in the Watertown Savings Bank Room at the Watertown Free Public Library, 123 Main St., Watertown, on Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. The art and writings are on display in the gallery on the second floor of the library. Now retitled “Edible Plants,” the second iteration of Plants of Our Past invites writers and visual artists to create work about ten more species of local wildly growing plants that are edible. Watertown Closings and Trash Collection Delays for Thanksgiving

The Thanksgiving holiday will impact Watertown City facilities, as well as trash collection this week. See details in the City of Watertown’s announcement:

Watertown City Hall and Senior Center will be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 23 and 24, 2023 and the Library will be closing at 5 PM on Wednesday, November 22 and will be closed on Thursday, November 23, 2023 for Thanksgiving. 

Please be aware that there is NO trash or recycling pickup on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23, 2023. The holiday postpones pickup by one day to Friday, November 24, and Friday’s pickup will be on Saturday, November 25, 2023.

Author Victoria Atamian Waterman, Pulitzer Prize-Winning Journalist Stephen Kurkjian Speaking at Watertown Library

Victoria Waterman and Stephen Kurkjian will appear at the Armenian Museum of America in a program co-sponsored with the Watertown Free Public Library. The following announcement was provided by the Watertown Library:

On Tuesday, Dec. 12, the Armenian Museum of America and the Watertown Free Public Library will welcome author Victoria Waterman in conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Stephen Kurkjian. The writers will discuss Waterman’s novel Who She Left Behind during a free talk at the Watertown Free Public Library. Waterman’s novel is historical fiction based on her own family’s history, spanning multiple generations from the final days of the Ottoman Empire to the Armenian neighborhoods in RI & MA in the 1990s.

Some Watertown City Facilities to Close Friday for Veterans Day

With Veterans Day falling on Saturday, the observed holiday for the City of Watertown will be on Friday. The City announced that Watertown City Hall and the Senior Center will be closed on Friday, November 10, 2023 in observance of the Veterans Day holiday. The Watertown Free Public Library will be open on Friday, but will close on Saturday, November 11, 2023. Please be aware that there is NO delay for trash and recycling pickup schedule for the week.

Several Hundred Come Out for Watertown Library’s Zine Fest

The Watertown Free Public Library hosted Zine Fest for the third time on Oct. 14, and people came out in droves to take part. Around 500 people attended the third Zine Fest, according to the Watertown Library. Zines — pronounced “zeens” — are small-batch, hand-made publications that come in all shapes, sizes, and formats.

Library’s Watertown Zine Fest to Gather DIY Creators and Publishers for Third Year

On Saturday, October 14, the Watertown Free Public Library (WFPL) will host the third-annual Watertown Zine Fest — a celebration of DIY publishing, creativity, and idea sharing. This year, festival highlights will include over forty zinester-vendors from near and far, a “zine-making hive” where anyone can get creative, and guest lectures that explore the intersection of zines, mental health, and Indigenous perspectives. As always, the event is free to all. Not sure what a zine is? No problem!

Library’s Collective Memory Project Preserves Watertown’s Past and Present

In the fall of 2021, Watertown Free Public Library staff began asking community members to go through their albums, scroll through their phones, and share three personal photographs that represent “you, your family, or your connection to Watertown.” Each photograph was added to the Library’s online local history collection, preserved as a record of the community’s past and present. As of this month, the Watertown Collective Memory Project digital collection is now live on the Library’s website. The collection of 300+ photos and interviews represents two years of community submissions which document the people, events, and culture of Watertown in the last 80 years. “It’s my job to collect, preserve, and provide access to materials reflecting the history of Watertown.” says Watertown’s local history librarian, Caroline Littlewood. “But I can’t do it alone.

In her one-woman performance, Sheryl Faye brings Justice Ginsburg to life. Ginsburg was an American lawyer and jurist who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1993 until her death in September 2020.
