WHS Athletic Hall of Fame Seeking Nominations for Class of 2017

The Watertown High School Athletic Hall of Fame announced it will continue to accept nominations for this year’s class until March 15. Founded in 1992, the Hall, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, honors individuals and teams who have made significant contributions to the community through their time as student-athletes, or in support of various athletic programs at Watertown High School. This year’s inductees will be honored at a banquet this fall. Recent inductees include former Red Raider greats Casey Bracket, Nick Goodman, Mary, Catherine, Bethany, & Jane Rogers, as well as the 1983 Middlesex League Champion football team. Watertown Boys Basketball Team Grabs Top Seed in North Section Tourney

It’s been three years since the Watertown boys basketball team has played on the parquet of the TD Garden, but if the seeds hold up the Raiders will bound for the state semis this year. 

The Raiders topped the seedings of the MIAA Div. 3 North Boys Basketball Tournament bracket, released Friday morning. In 2014, Watertown made it to Boston for the State Semifinal and lost a heartbreaker in overtime against Cardinal Spellman. Last year the Raiders got the eighth seed and beat Ipswich in the first round before losing to North Reading in the quarterfinal. In 2015, the sixth-seeded Raiders lost in the first round to Bedford.

Watertown Girls Basketball Team Could Face Rivals in State Tourney

After reaching the State Final last year, the Watertown girls basketball team’s road to Springfield has some familiar foes in the way, including their archrivals. The MIAA released its girls basketball state tournament brackets Friday morning, and Watertown could have rematches against teams they played in the regular season, including playoff clash with Belmont for the third straight year. The Raiders, which finished 14-4, received the third seed in Div. 2 North, while Belmont claimed the stop seed with a 16-4 record. There are three other Middlesex League teams in the bracket.

Watertown’s Koufos Grabs 3rd at Divisional Track Meet, 3 Relays Place

Watertown’s relay teams showed they could compete with the best teams in their division during the MIAA Div. 4 Indoor Championships, and two runners placed in their individual events on Thursday at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center. The Raider’s top finish came from Watertown junior Emily Koufos, who battled her way through the pack in the mile run, and closed a gap of more than 25 meters on the final lap to nip a runner at the line for third place. “I knew the pace was fast, and said I have to run my own race,” Koufos said. “I kept my composure and started by passing two girls, which put me in fourth.

WHS Sports: Wrestlers Qualify for States, Track League Meet & Hoops

The Watertown High School wrestling team continued its successful season by qualifying several athletes for the State Divisional Meet. 

Watertown had 12 wrestlers competing in the Div. 3 Central Section meet on Saturday at Ashland High School. Van Athanasopoulos was the highest finisher for there Raiders. He went 3-1 and won the third-place match in the 145 pound competition. He will compete in the Div.

Coming off one of the most successful seasons in years, the Watertown High School football team is nearly ready to kick off the season – well the preseason, anyway. Last year the Raiders lost in the section final to league-rival Stoneham, but defeated Belmont on a last-minute field goal. The first scrimmage for the 2016 squad will be held Saturday, Aug. 27 at 10 a.m. at Victory Field. After a second scrimmage at Newburyport, Watertown plays its first official game on Saturday, Sept.

Watertown Football Team Seeks Third Straight Playoff Berth

Coach John Cacace and the Watertown High School football team start their campaign to earn a third straight MIAA playoff berth this Friday at Victory Field. The Raiders face a challenging schedule, which includes a trip to Rhode Island and a home date with Belmont on Thanksgiving Day. See the Schedule of Meets for the Watertown Cross Country Teams

Watertown High School’s boys’ and girls’ school cross country teams are getting ready to start their seasons this week. Both teams will have a scrimmage this week, and then start the competitions that count with a home meet on Sept. 16 against Winchester. Generally, the boys and girls compete at the same meets, with different starting times. Home meets are held at Arsenal Park – 145 Talcott Ave.
