WEEKEND FUN: MusicFest, Theater, Yard Art, Screenless Project, Sensory Friendly Movie Screening

Let’s all start this weekend by going to the MusicFest on Friday evening. It’s the 13th annual gathering of Watertown musicians, both professional, adult and child performances. If you are not in a musical frame of mind, check out “The Mushroom Cure” at the Mosesian Center for the Arts. On Friday and Saturday evenings, this one-man show performed by Adam Strauss is about Michael Pollen’s exploration of psychedelics. It is going to be filmed live to be part of a future feature film.

WEEKEND FUN: Poetry Inspired by the Revolution, Farm to Gallery Exhibit, Karaoke, Healing Power of Art, Persian Dining

My weekend suggestions for this first week of April includes two exhibits to go see. The one at the Mosesian, Art and Healing is a mixed media show that will be there until May 1. Check out the mostly cardboard piece in the photo below. The library has a new exhibit of fiber art called Farm to Form, which is a collaboration between Gore Place and fibre artists. Celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of America at the Mount Auburn Cemetery with a literary historian who will talk about how authors in the 1800s turned the American Revolution into our national legend.

WEEKEND FUN: Irish Dancing, Used Book Sale, Theater, Benefit Concert, Amigas Wellbeing Summit

I love the variety of activities that I have found for you this weekend. Let’s start with a trip to Gore Place on Friday evening or Saturday morning for a used book sale. You know you want to read more and spend less time on screens. Also, on Friday night and Saturday afternoon there is a play called Human Vivekananda at the Mosesian. It highlights the life of Swami Vivekananda, his spiritual and human side of life. Saturday there is an Irish dance demonstration at the library.

WEEKEND FUN: Children’s Theater, Drawing Nature, LGBTQ+ Crafting, Lasagna Dinner, Blood Drive

Friday evening there is a drop-in for LGBTQ+ folks at the Hatch Maker Space. Hatch is open to all in their regular hours, too, but this particular gathering features an optional maker activity designed by their facilitator. All weekend there is a child-focused theater event at the Mosesian: the Watertown Children’s Theater presents Alice in Wonderland Jr. Take your youngsters for lots of fun and maybe they will want to join in the next show. A blood drive isn’t exactly deep in the fun category of things to do, but it feels like an important thing to do if you can. There is one on Saturday at Hibernian Hall along with a food drive. It always feels good to give to others.

WEEKEND FUN: Irish & Scottish Music, Lunar New Year, Karaoke, Cribbage, Family Yoga

Let’s celebrate that this snowy February is almost behind us, a month to remember. To get your ya-yas out, you could go drink and sing at Karaoke this Friday night at the Mighty Squirrel Taproom. Or Saturday afternoon, you might head to the library to join our Asian neighbors celebrating the Lunar New Year. If you are in a competitive frame of mind, there is a cribbage tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Ancient Order of the Hibernians. Perhaps instead you feel like getting mellow with your kids and stretching out your shoveling muscles.

WEEKEND FUN: 2 Concerts, Canvas & Karaoke, Rock Climbing & an Animated Movie

I suggest you start the weekend at Nzuko restaurant where on Fridays they hold a Canvas & Karaoke night. You can sing, then paint or paint then sing, either way a fun combination for the beginning of your weekend. Saturday night there are two rock bands playing at the Canadian American Club. I love the name, Lazy Boy Rockers, don’t you? I have two suggestions for your kids at the end of their school vacation week. How about taking them to a Kid’s Clip and Climb at Central Rock Gym?

WEEKEND FUN: Polar Plunge, Later Night Munchies, Hand Sewn Craft, Mt. Auburn Cemetery Walking Tour

I am guessing you are truly missing the extreme cold weather, so how about signing up to do a polar plunge at Arsenal Yards on Saturday? That will make you plenty cold again. It is a fund-raiser for the Special Olympics, and it should be almost as fun to watch as to actually take the plunge. After getting soaking wet there, you could head over to the library’s maker space to make a hand-sewn valentine sachet for your loved one. Our maker space is not all about high tech!

WEEKEND FUN: Cello Concert, Yoga Open House, Armenian Winter Ball, Landscapes Exhibit

You might all be feeling the need for some meditative time this weekend after last weekend’s doozy of a snow storm. If so, head over to Artemis Yoga on Saturday afternoon for a few free introductory classes. They can help you work out the kinks in your back from too much shoveling. Taking in an exhibition of art with the theme Contemporary Landscapes, might also be calming. The opening reception is on Thursday, but the show will be up until March, so it will be there for your enjoyment this weekend.
