WEEKEND FUN: Gorky Exhibit, Free Mansion Tours, WHS Art Exhibit, Christmas Concert

This weekend’s solstice marks the point where days stop getting shorter and begin gaining sunlight. Hoorah! We are also in the middle of Chanukah, and Christmas is on its way, in case you hadn’t noticed. These December days are perfect for going to see art, especially if you want to procrastinate on your gift shopping. If you haven’t seen the Gorky show at the Armenian Museum, head on over this weekend.

WEEKEND FUN: Watercolors, Craft Drop In, SOLSTICE & Ceramics Demonstration

The New England Watercolor Society’s show at The Mosesian Center for the Arts includes “Boatyard at Sunset” by Rick Osann. Let’s make this a weekend dedicated to arts and crafts! A few days ago I went to the reception of the watercolor show at the Mosesian, and it is truly worth a visit. The art has been collected from around New England and it’s fantastic. On Friday evening there is an LGBTQ+ drop in at the Hatch Maker Space.

WEEKEND FUN: Merry Mingle, Lego Building, Holiday Makers Market, Concert, “Christmas Carol” Performance

This is a packed Watertown weekend with winter and holiday events. On Saturday afternoon there will be an art sale at the Mosesian Center for the Arts with a wide variety of arts including ceramics, paintings, ornaments and jewelry. It’s great for shopping locally and supporting our artists. Saturday evening at Gore Place there will be a dramatic reading by Johnny Kinsman of A Christmas Carol including musical accompaniment by Justin Ouellet and Ann Moss, both local musicians. On Sunday there is a hands-on intergenerational Lego building activity at the Jewish Community Day School, it’s a challenge to build the world’s tallest Chanukiah! Later Sunday afternoon at the library, you can go relax after all the holiday activities with a winter concert given by the Vivace Music School Faculty. No need to leave Watertown this weekend to find some holiday cheer!

WEEKEND FUN: South Asian Theater Festival, Llamas, High School Play, Poet Laureate, Singer at Pub

This weekend is full of theater, with the Mosesian Center for the Arts hosting a three-day South Asian theater festival, and Watertown High School presenting Little Women. On Friday, Massachusetts’ inaugural Poet Laureate will be appearing at Atrium School. Kids can see a flock of llamas on Saturday, while Johnny Malone will be playing at Conley’s on Saturday. WEEKEND FUN: Holiday Market, Young Rockers, “Taskmaster” Watch Party, Organ Concert

An entertaining start to this weekend is a trip to see the Watertown Children’s Theater production of Anastasia: The Musical on Friday evening or on Saturday. Then for lots of lighthearted fun, Saturday afternoon there is a Taskmaster (TV show) watching party at the library. It is a funny and tongue-in-cheek TV show that is perfect for group watching. I can hear the laughter now! Sunday in the late morning or afternoon there is a holiday gift shopping block party at Arsenal Yards.

WEEKEND FUN: Children’s Theater, Author Talk on Revolutionary War Spy, Craft Fair, Veterans Day Luncheon

This weekend in Watertown starts off with a fundraising event at the Mosesian Center for the Arts. It will be a lively community gathering and set of performances to collect funds in support of children participating in Watertown Children’s Theatre and art programs at the Mosesian. There are door prizes to win too! In anticipation of the holidays, Saturday there will be a crafts fair at Gore Place.  Think about supporting local artists when gift shopping this season! Also on Saturday afternoon, history buffs can enjoy an author’s talk about the trial of a Watertown Revolutionary War spy, presented by J.L. Bell.

WEEKEND FUN: Halloween Fun, Two Plays Hit the Stage, Artists Open Studios

Halloween celebrations are in full swing this weekend. The Commander’s Mansion will host the second annual Wicked Watertown on Saturday, and enjoy some fall fun at Gore Place on Sunday. It’s a weekend of theater at the Mosesian Center for the Arts, with two classic plays hitting the stage — one put on by the Watertown Children’s Theatre and the other by the Actors’ Shakespeare Project. Take an inside look at artists studios on Saturday and Sunday during the Turtle Studios Open Studios. While the event is just over the river in Newton, several Watertown artists create their works at the studios.

This weekend’s fun starts on Friday with the St. James Armenian Church’s 78th annual bazaar. Go grab some shish, losh or chicken kabobs while your kids get face painted and you pick up your raffle winnings. On Saturday starting at 11 the library is putting on their impressive Zine Fest. You can participate as a writer, reader or just if you are zine curious.
