Nominations Sought for Watertown Historical Preservation Awards

Each year Watertown honors those who have excelled in preserving the town’s historical buildings, and nominations are being sought for the 2015 awards. The Watertown Historical Commission Preservation Awards can be awarded to any individual, organization or project that has contributed to the preservation or recognition of Watertown’s Historic resources.There are seven award categories which a nominee may be considered. Applications for nominations for the Watertown Historic Commission 2015 Historical Preservation Awards are now available at http://www.watertown-ma.gov/DocumentCenter/View/16668

The completed form is due in the Historical Commission office by April 9, 2015. The 2015 Historical Preservation Awards Ceremony will be held Thursday May 28, 2015 at the Commander’s Mansion, 440 Talcott Ave. in Watertown.

Police Log: 2 Teens Busted for Bringing Air Gun to Boys Club

The following information was provided by the Watertown Police Department. Arrests
March 16, 3:08 p.m.: Target security spotted a woman placing items in a back and attempt to leave the store. The merchandise was worth $639.22, and the 27-year-old Dorchester woman was arrested on a charge of larceny over $250. March 17, 5 p.m.: A woman was seen putting a 32-inch Vizio TV into a cart at Target and tried to leave without paying. The 23-year-old Brighton woman was arrested on a charge of shoplifting, a subsequent offense.

Cub Scouts Competing at Pinewood Derby in Watertown

The top cars from Cub Scout packs around the area will compete in the 11th Annual Sons of Liberty District Pinewood Derby at the Arsenal Project. Each of the scouts have carved out and decorated cars from pieces of wood and won their local Pinewood Derby competition. Cars can weigh five ounces and be seven inches long. The cars will compete on a 30-foot-long track set up at the food court of the Arsenal Project (formerly Arsenal Mall) at 485 Arsenal St. in Watertown on Saturday, April 4 from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

The competitors are first-graders (Tigers), second-graders (Wolves), third-graders (Bears), fourth-graders (first-year Webelos) and fifth-graders (second-year Webelos).

Watertown’s Unseen Homeless Problem is Growing

{This is the first in a series of articles on homeless and needy in Watertown}
They may not be as obvious as the homeless in Boston or Harvard Square, but Watertown has its share of homeless people and families, and the problem has grown. Recent bad economic times followed by an upswing in the price of rentals in town has spelled trouble for some in town, said Danielle DeMoss, Watertown’s Social Services Resource Specialist. “This month alone three families are facing evictions, and another is currently homeless,” DeMoss said. Mark Harris, pastor of First Parish Church in Watertown, said he has seen the problem growing. “I had not seen homeless people until a couple years ago,” Harris said.

Marathon Legend Dick Hoyt Speaking at Watertown Special Ed Awards Event

Boston Marathon fixture Dick Hoyt will be the key note speaker at an event that honors those who have contributed to the education of special education students in Watertown. Dick and his son Rick joined to form Team Hoyt. Dick pushes Rick in his wheel chair and the pair has run more than 1,000 races since 1977, including many Boston Marathons. Hoyt will speak at the 2015 Watertown SEPAC (Special Education Parent Advisory Council) Awards on April 9 at 6:15 p.m. at the Hosmer Elementary School Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
