Blind Pedestrian Who was Struck Crossing Arsenal Street Has Died

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announced this week that Arthur Bourgoin, 78, of Watertown has died from injuries sustained after being struck by a vehicle in Watertown on Tuesday, March 3. Bourgoin, who was visually impaired, was a volunteer at the Perkins School For The Blind, according to the announcement from the DA’s office. “This victim was attempting to cross the street when he was hit by a vehicle traveling on Arsenal Street,” said District Attorney Ryan. “Nationwide, in recent years, we have made progress in terms of pedestrian safety, but the number of deaths is still significant. The latest figures from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety show that pedestrian deaths occur primarily in urban areas and account for 14 percent of crash deaths.

Dozens of musicians, young and old, performed at the fourth-annual MusicFest, which benefited the Friends of Watertown Music. The event was held on March 6 at Watertown Middle School and featured multiple stages. MusicFest is organized by the Friends of Watertown Music. All donations go directly to the Music Department of the WPS. Donations are tax-deductible and gratefully accepted year-round.

After many months of designing and going back to the drawing board, the major residential and retail project at the corner of Arsenal and Irving streets was introduced to the public this week. The mixed-use project named Elan Watertown will include two buildings linked by a two-story glass bridge, an which have 282 apartments and space for three stores or other retail uses. It will be four stories and a maximum of 50 feet high, said architect Tom Schultz of The Architectural Team. The development on the Arsenal Street corridor, a few blocks east of Watertown Square, has been designed by developer Greystar and the consultant hired by the town to develop the new design standards and guidelines – Gamble Associates. It has been a test case for the proposed new design rules.

MIT Expert Coming to Watertown to Speak About Vibrant Aging

Join your Watertown neighbors for an interactive presentation from the MIT AgeLab on Tuesday, March 31. Julie Miller, MSW, will talk about the MIT AgeLab and its research, “Forecast the Aging Future of Generation Y,” and screen/discuss her documentary film, “Vibrant Aging.” The event is open to the public and will run from 7-9 p.m. (6:30 Sign-in) at the Apartments at Coolidge School’s Auditorium, 319 Arlington St., Watertown. Miller is a Research Associate at the MIT AgeLab and a Lecturer at Northeastern University. Julie’s background in gerontological social work and mixed media production is reflected in her qualitative research. She received her Master’s in Social Work with a concentration in Gerontology from The University of California, Berkeley.
