HBC took the Watertown Summer Basketball League title by defeating Zards 2-0 in the finals series.

The Watertown Summer Basketball League ended with a dominating victory by champions HBC in the second game of the best-of-three finals series.

The Watertown Recreation Department provided the game summaries of the finals. HBC beat Donohue’s Kaos in the semifinals and Zards – the other finalists – took out the defending champions, Made Men.

Game 1 – Wednesday, Aug. 12

In one of the most competitive games in Watertown Recreation Summer Hoop finals history, HBC edged Zards by the score of 69-66. Temple graduate Jake O’Brien enjoyed a monster game and led HBC with a game high 22 points. Ryan Sharry was also a huge factor to HBC’s win as he added 14 points to the final score. However, Sam Longwell was able to keep the Zards in the game with 21 points, as teammate Joey Flannery added 18 points.

With minutes remaining in the game, HBC thought they had a steady lead until Zards’ Isaiah Nelsen knocked down a quick three-point shot bringing the Zards right back into the game. The game was back within a one point differential as HBC scored with seconds remaining, allowing them to win the game and lead the championship series 1-0.

Game 2 – Thursday, Aug. 13

Jake O’Brien scored a game high 22 points, with Watertown’s very own Chris Hurley adding 19 points as HBC dispatched visiting Zards by the score of 77-62 to bring home the 2015 Papas Elite Championship!

The game was never in doubt as HBC controlled the play and tempo for most of the game. Zards had their moments and never gave up until the final buzzer went off. Isaiah Nelsen kept the Zards in the game with a career high 29 points, along with teammate Sam Longwell tallying in 20 points. The Zards tight defense and aggressive style of play kept them in the game. In the end, the size, quickness, and love for the game lead HBC straight to the win.
