Watertown quarterback Deon Smith used his legs to lead the Raiders to a win over Wakefield in the Middlesex League opener, Friday night.

The junior ran for 183 yards, including a 93-yard touchdown run in the third quarter at Wakefield. That came after a 32-yard scamper for a TD in the first quarter, according to the Boston Globe box score.

Conner Kennelly accounted for the rest of the scoring with two field goals and two extra points. The Raiders held off a fourth quarter rally, beating Wakefield 20-14. The team is now 3-0, and stay on the road when they face Melrose on Friday at 7 p.m.

Field Hockey Adds 3 to Streak

One streak ended this week, but the big one – the unbeaten streak – remains in tact for the Watertown High School field hockey team.

The Raiders won three games this week. On Tuesday, the Raiders went to Stoneham and won 6-0, with junior Kourtney Kennedy getting a hat trick and senior Grace Duguay adding two more.

Kennedy added four more goals in Watertown’s 7-1 win over Lincoln-Sudbury on Thursday at Victory Field. The score by L-S was the first against Watertown since the state semifinal in 2013 – a run of 30 games.

Friday, Watertown shut out Wilmington 3-0 at Victory Field, with Mikayla Paone, Michaela Antonellis and Aurora Fidler each scoring. The Raiders are now 7-0, and the unbeaten streak stands at 145 games.

Cross Country

The boys’ cross country team beat Burlington 31-28 on Monday, but the girls fell short, 41-17.
