LETTER: Important Meeting on Future of Watertown Schools Coming Up

What’s Going On?

Watertown Public Schools: Second Community Forum, Wednesday, July 27, 7 p.m., High School Auditorium, 50 Columbia St.

Whether you have kids in the WPS or not, these meetings are very important. SMMA, an architectural firm specializing in educational facilities, has been hired to evaluate all our school facilities given: changing educational instructional needs and state/federal mandates; our old, tired buildings; and increasing student enrollment numbers.

Can buildings be renovated within the same footprint, will they require new additions, be retired, or need to be built from the ground up, i.e., new construction? Even if we qualify for some state reimbursement from the MSBA (MA School Building Authority) a debt exclusion (a tax increase) is in our future. We need to approach these decisions wisely as a community.

The education of Watertown’s children and the proactive use of our tax dollars calls for community input and oversight. Please do not let your ideas, questions, and concerns go to waste by “sitting these meetings out” and saying “nothing changes, it’s the same old, same old.”

The kids need your help to empower their education and their aspirations; the town officials need to hear your take on all this; and I need you to show up, introduce yourself, and be counted as someone invested in the future of Watertown.

Best,
Elodia Thomas
Watertown Resident
