A new Watertown business will allow people to learn to twist, flip and hang in the air.
Gravity Alternative Movement is an aerial circus arts training facilities which will offer classes for trapeze, aerial fabric, and aerial hoop, said owner and instructor Trevor Kafka.
“With aerial fabric, or silks there are two pieces of fabric and you can do rolls down it, drops and other moves,” Kafka said. “Trapeze is like the flying trapeze, but there is no swinging. You move around a bar, a little bit like gymnastics. In hoop there is a huge metal hoop where you create shapes.”
In the aerial circus arts attracts people for different reasons, Kafka said.
“People looking for a new work out (come to aerial circus arts), or someone looking for a performance challenge or outlet,” Kafka said. “It’s a really good ab workout.”
Kafka has been teaching aerial circus arts for six years. When he was young, Kafka said he was not into team sports, but aerial circus arts appealed to him. Kafka teaches at two studios in Somerville and one at Boston University, but he noticed there is not really an outlet for people in Watertown or surrounding towns.
There was an outdoor aerial circus arts near Gore Place last year, but that company moved to Stow, Kafka said.
Gravity Alternative Movement will have a grand opening on Saturday, May 13, at 7 p.m. where there will be demonstrations, discounts and raffles for free classes.
Classes will begin on Wednesday, May 17, with taster classes where people can drop in and try the various apparatuses. In June, the facility will begin skill building classes, Kafka said. There will be classes for beginners and for the more experienced.
“It is like a fitness class. The instructor reviews what they learned and build on it,” Kafka said.
Gravity Alternative Movement is located at 30 Manley Way, in the same space as Boston Rhythmic (and next to Launch Trampoline Park). Find out more about Gravity at www.gravityalternativemovement.com.
