A recommendation for how to renovate Mt. Auburn Street will be discussed and likely approved by the Town Council’s Public Works Committee on Wednesday, June 27, 2018.
The Department of Public Works has been discussing proposals to repave and renovate the major artery through Watertown for several years, and has had a number of public meetings over the last year to share ideas for how the street will look.
Proposals have included reducing the number of travel lanes from two to one in many places, putting right turn lanes at key intersections and adding bicycle lanes for most of the length of the roadway.
The project will ultimately have to be approved by the full Town Council.

What happened to the idea of doing a trial marking of the street?
Where the proposed new single car lanes, bike lanes, turn lanes and reduced parking areas are laid out and we can get realistic experience and feedback.
With such a big change it seems irresponsible not to do a trial run.
I don’t recall any mention of a trial marking of the stretch of Mt. Auburn St
located in Watertown (would be a good idea). They were planning on having
a trial marking of Mt. Auburn St. from Belmont St to Fresh Pond Parkway
for the dedicated bus lanes. That was supposed to happen sometime in May
or June, but has yet to materialize. I can’t even begin to imagine the nightmare
of a mess that’s going to create, especially with vehicles making a left turn into
the Star market parking lot.
