Popeye the Sailor turns 85 this year, and Watertown Cable will be airing a special featuring his cartoons.

The following information was provided by Fred Grandinetti, host of Watertown Cable’s Drawing With Fred:

The Watertown Channel will be honoring the animated film debut of Popeye the Sailor with a special.Eighty-five years ago, on July 14, 1933, the sailor man jumped on stage to dance the hula with Betty Boop. Over 500 animated cartoons followed for both motion picture and television screens. Today the sailor has millions of followers on face book located at https://www.facebook.com/Popeye/

The special will feature cartoons which originally appeared on the big screen. These titles include, “I’m In the Army Now” (1935), “I Never Changes My Altitude” (1937) and “With Poopdeck Pappy” (1940).

Here is the program’s schedule during the remainder of July and through August:

Sunday- 7:00 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.
Tuesday- 3:00 p.m.
Thursday-6:30 p.m.
Saturday- 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
