Long-time Watertown Town Clerk John Flynn.

John “Jack” Flynn, who served as the Town Clerk of Watertown for more than a quarter century, died on Friday, May 7, 2021 after a brief illness. He was 63 years old.

Born in Cambridge, he served as Deputy City Clerk and Principal Budget Analyst for the City of Cambridge before becoming Watertown’s Town Clerk in 1995. He retired in 2021.

Flynn enjoyed talking about politics at the local, state and national level, and was a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox. He had season tickets for many years. Flynn also enjoyed spending time in Marshfield during the summer months.

Upon Flynn’s retirement, Watertown Town Manager Michael Driscoll spoke of Flynn’s professionalism and his sense of humor. He added that Flynn oversaw many elections during his tenure, but called the 2020 elections — with the thousands of mail-in ballots, early voting and the challenges of the Pandemic — Flynn’s “crowning moment in his long, distinguished career.”

Along with running the Clerk’s office, Flynn and his staff also took over management of the annual Faire on the Square in 2012.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend visiting hours in St. John’s Church, 2254 Massachusetts Ave., North Cambridge on Friday, May 14, 2021 from 4-7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. John’s Church on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at 11 a.m. All attendees are required to wear face coverings and practice social distancing. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jack’s memory may be made to: Town of Watertown Faire on the Square, an event that was very special to Jack, or the Jimmy Fund would be appreciated.
