A Watertown City Councilor will get a look from the other side of municipal government when she takes a position as an attorney for the City of Waltham.

District D Councilor Emily Izzo recently accepted a position as an Assistant City Solicitor in Waltham, reported the Waltham Times. She will begin on Sept. 2, 2025.

Watertown News reached out to Izzo for comment on her new job.

“I think it will definitely help with my role on the Council, seeing the legal side of how an entire City, similar to Watertown operates,” she said. “I also think being a City Councilor will help with my role in Waltham.”

During the Waltham City Council meeting where she was appointed, Izzo was asked if continuing to serve as a Watertown City Councilor would be a conflict of interest. She said that Waltham City Solicitor Katherine Laughman did not have concerns about a conflict related to her role in Watertown, and added that she would recuse herself from anything that might be a conflict of interest, the Times reported.

Izzo started serving as City Councilor in November 2021. She was elected that year, and was selected to fill the vacancy left when Kenneth Woodland resigned. She was sworn in to serve for the remaining month-plus before the new term began in January 2022. She is running for re-election in 2025, and has no opponent on the ballot.

Currently, Izzo works as Tax Counsel for the Department of Revenue’s Division of Local Services. She has worked in that department for six years.
