Building Committee Narrowing Sites for New Watertown High School Soon

An illustration of how Watertown High School could be built on both sides of Common Street. In this scenario, the main academic building replaces the former Phillips School, while the gym, auditorium and Senior Center go on the current WHS site. The black white triangle is the historic cemetery next to WHS. The final decision on the site of the new Watertown High School is still months away, but the final list of places to be considered will be decided by the end of February. Architects and school officials have been looking at possible places where the new WHS could be built. They considered Town owned properties large enough to build a high school.

Support Group for Family of People Living with Mental Illness

Family Mental Health support group: NAMI Family Mental Health Support Group is a free, structured, confidential peer-led support group for the families of individuals living with mental illness.  

A support group will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 7:30 – 9 p.m. at the Newton Wellesley Hospital, at 2014 Washington Street in Newton 02461, on the second floor of the main building in the Bowles Conference Center, Room Bowles 1. Parking will be validated. This is organized by the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI).

Police Log: Men Use Counterfeit $20s, Pickup Catches Fire

The following information was provided by the Watertown Police Department. Arrests

Jan. 27, 3 a.m.: Police received a call from a motorist who followed another driver from Soldiers Field Road in Brighton into Watertown after observing him driving erratically. When he stopped at a red light, the driver appeared to fall asleep, and the vehicle appeared to have a flat tire. Police located the vehicle in Watertown Square and pulled the driver over on Pleasant Street.

Capital Improvement Plan

Watertown’s Capital Plan Includes School, Park and Street Repair Projects

Watertown’s plan for major projects and purchases includes funding for the school building projects, improvements to parks, upgrades of fire stations and street and sidewalk repairs. The proposed Fiscal Year 2021-25 Capital Improvement Plan was released this week, and discussions of the projects begin this coming week. One of the largest expenditures on the five-year spending plan is $295 million on the rebuilding and renovation of Watertown’s three elementary schools and Watertown High School. Numerous parks have improvement projects in the plan. The most significant is the $3 million renovation of the Victory Field Track and Courts.

Watertown Wrestling Program on the Rise in Time for State Tourney

Watertown High School wrestlers practice moves. The team has been one of the most successful teams in school history. In an otherwise quiet corner Watertown High School, 30-some students work up a sweat and turn the small room into a steam room while doing a workout that looks like it belongs in a Spartan Race and an Army bootcamp. “Most people would be done after that,” said WHS assistant wrestling coach Andrew Scopa. “They are just getting started.”

Residents Air Concerns About Galen St., Traffic & Watertown’s Planning Process

She hosted a meeting at the Watertown Library to hear residents’ concerns about the proposed zoning change and related issues. More than 40 residents concerned about a proposed biotech project on Galen Street crammed into a meeting room at the Watertown Library Wednesday evening. They worried about what would be built there, and the traffic impact on one of the most congested roadways in town, and how projects are approved in Watertown. Those at the meeting said they would like to find a way to put a temporary halt to development, at least in the Galen Street area, so that a plan can be formed to improve the whole area.
