Watertown Woman Honored for Tireless Advocacy of Solar Energy

Watertown’s Jocelyn Tager recently received an honor for her work advocating for solar energy. A Watertown woman who made it her mission to spread the use of solar energy in town, and beyond, recently received an award for her work and accolades from the Town Council. Jocelyn “Jolly” Tager was honored at the Solar Energy BusinessAssociation of New England’s Summer Solstice Celebration for her advocacy for solar energy. Last week, the Town Council recognized Tager for, among other things, pushing for Watertown to become the first community in Massachusetts to have a solar requirement for new developments over a certain size. Tager said said she has enjoyed the accolades.

Summer Concert Features Patriotic Performance for Independence Day

The Waltham American Legion Band will play at Saltonstall Park on July 3. Start your Independence Day celebrations on July 3 when the Waltham American Legion Band performs during the Watertown Summer Concert Series. The band formed in 1948 has performed across the United States, and overseas. The Waltham American Legion Band was the first American Band to play in Russia, where it performed “God Bless America” in Red Square. Today the band consists of about fifty members both veterans and civilians ranging in age from teens to nineties hailing from Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. 

The concert begins Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in Saltonstall Park (next to Town Hall).

Police Log: Man Caught with Meth & Pills, Driver Unsuccessfully Tries to Evade Officers

June 18, 7:43 a.m.: A man came into the Police Station because he believed he had a warrant for his arrest. Officers confirmed that the man was wanted on a warrant from Waltham District Court from 1992. The 51-year-old man from West Valley, Utah, was arrested on a total of four warrants from Waltham District Court, Cambridge District Court and Stoughton District Court. June 20, 8:42 a.m.: Police responded to a call for a man who was trespassing at the Watertown Housing building on Waverley Avenue.

Watertown Police Arrest Armed Robbery Suspect Who has a Prior Record

Joseph Boyda, 44, of Worcester, was arrested in connection with an armed robbery in Watertown. Watertown Police arrested a Worcester man for the armed robbery of a hair salon on Wednesday. Police located Joseph Boyda, 44, and place him under arrest on Thursday for armed robbery while masked. He was arraigned in Waltham District Court on Friday, said Watertown Police Lt. James O’Connor. On Wednesday at about 7 p.m., Boyda allegedly robbed the Behind the Hair salon on Main Street in Watertown while wearing a mask and sunglasses.

Council Raises Water, Sewer Rates & Asks Questions

Watertown’s water and sewer rates will be rising after the Town Council approved the new rates, but they also had questions about how the rates increased as the amount of water used dropped. The new rates will include a 2.5 percent increase for water rates and 4.9 percent for sewer rates, for a combined increase of 4 percent. The average customer would pay an extra $13.42 per quarter, or 15 cents a day. See more details about the rates by clicking here. The Council heard a presentation at the end of May about the proposed rates, and the rates that were adopted were identical to the recommendations from the town’s water and sewer consultant.

Armed Man Robs Watertown Hair Salon With Customers Inside

Watertown Police seek a man who held up a hair salon Wednesday evening with what turned out to be a gun that shoots blanks. Shortly after 7 p.m., a man wearing a mask came into a busy Behind the Hair salon on Main Street and robbed it with what appeared to be a gun, said Watertown Police Lt. James O’Connor

“He fired a round and we were able to recover a casing,” O’Connor said. “It was determined it is in fact a starter pistol round.” The suspect took an undisclosed amount of money, and then left the store from the back. He is believed to have fled on a bicycle heading east toward Watertown Square.
