Pay Tribute to Your Favorite Teacher Through the Watertown Community Foundation

The Watertown Community Foundation is offering the opportunity to pay tribute to your favorite teacher. The Teacher Tribute Program is a special way to honor and thank special teachers, educators, staff members, teams, departments, or administrators, according to the WCF. The program originated with the Watertown Education Foundation, but with the merging of the groups it has been taken over by the Community Foundation. “Since 1992 your generous contributions have helped raise thousands of dollars for educational grants to teachers!” the WCF announced.

Council Subcommittee to hear About Accessory Dwelling Units

The Town Council’s Human Services Committee will hold the next in the series of meetings on affordable housing. This meeting will focus on accessory dwelling units. The Human Services subcommittee sent out the following information:

The Committee on Human Services will hold a meeting on Wednesday, April 24 at 7:15 p.m. in the Louis P. Andrews Conference Room on the Third Floor at Town Hall. We will continue our discussion of affordable housing . The Committee will hear a presentation on Newton’s Accessory Dwelling Units program from James Freas, Deputy Director of Planning and Development for the City of Newton.

Police Log: Man Falsifies Inspection Sticker, Bus Rider Who Fell Asleep Arrested on Warrant

The following information was provided by the Watertown Police Department. Arrests

April 8, 10:40 a.m.: An officer monitoring traffic on North Beacon Street ran the plate of a vehicle and found that the owner had a warrant for his arrest. The vehicle was stopped and the officer confirmed the owner was driving. The 42-year-old Brockton man was arrested on the warrant from Quincy District Court for multiple motor vehicle violations. April 8, 2:26 p.m.: A man was seen placing groceries into a reusable shopping bag at Stop & Shop on Watertown Street, and leaving the store without paying.

Soil Borings to be Taken on Multiple Watertown Streets

Multiple streets in Watertown will be impacted by exploratory boring beginning April 22. The Department of Public Works announced that Pine Street, Essex Street, Nash Street and Oak Street will be the locations of bore drilling beginning Monday, April 22, at 7 a.m. Work, to be done by New England Geotech, is expected to last until 5 p.m. and occur over two days. “Disturbances to residents are anticipated to be minor, but residents may notice elevated short-term noise levels and equipment working,” according to the DPW announcement. Two-inch bores will be taken to test soil. Each bore takes between 1-3 hours to complete.

Watertown Wrestling Coach Turned Love of Working With Youth into Hall of Fame Career

Watertown High School wrestling coach Kevin Russo recently was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. A room full of well-wishers, one coming from across the Atlantic, gathered recently to see Watertown High School wrestling coach Kevin Russo be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Russo has had success where ever he has gone, notching more than 400 wins, but the longtime WHS coach said the thing that keeps him going is the satisfaction he gets from working with youth. Dozens of former wrestlers, parents and others were on hand to see Russo receive the Lifetime Service to Wrestling award at a ceremony held at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro on April 13, 2019. A plaque in his honor will be installed at the Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Okla.

Free Family Event at Arsenal Park in Celebration of Arbor Day

The public is invited to the 2019 Arbor Day of Service, a free family friendly celebration. The event will be held Thursday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Arsenal Park near the tot lot, rain or shine. Activities at the Arbor Day celebration include: tree pruning demonstrations, story time, sing along, sweet treats, crafts, games, and truckies (aka selfies in a truck).
