Work of Watertown Police, Firefighters Recognized by Post Office with Special Stamp

The U.S. Postal Service honored Watertown’s police officers and firefighters  Thursday with the unveiling of a stamp recognizing first responders. 

The Post Office is presenting local departments with a plaque featuring a larger image of the limited edition stamps. Linda Beattie, manager of Watertown’s three post offices, presented the plaques to Watertown Police Chief Michael Lawn, Watertown Deputy Fire Chief Dan Tardif, and Watertown Firefighter and EMT David Meagher during a ceremony at the Watertown Police Station. “For the work they did with the Boston Marathon bombers, we wanted to recognize them for their heroic actions,” Beattie said. “It has a special meaning for this town.” The stamp features three figures: a red firefighter holding an ax, a white paramedic holding a medical bag, and a blue police office shining a flashlight into the dark background partially filled with smoke.

Changes to Coolidge Square Get Recommendation of Council Subcommittee

A Town Council subcommittee recommended some significant changes to Mt. Auburn Street, including a redesign of one of the main intersections in Coolidge Square. 

Tuesday night, the Public Works Committee discussed the proposed changes to Mt. Auburn Street, east of School Street. The most significant change is the realignment of the intersection of Bigelow Avenue with Mt. Auburn Street, which also turns Kimball Road into a one-way street away from Mt.

WHS Sports: Boys Soccer Hosts Tourney Game, Girls Swimming Competes at League Meet

The Watertown High School boys soccer team hopes to make another deep run in the MIAA Div. 3 State Tournament. The Raiders will start their tourney with a home game on Friday night. 

Watertown will host Gloucester at Victory Field at 6 p.m. on Friday in a Div. 5 North first round game. The Raiders (12-5-1) earned the fourth seed in the North, while Gloucester (5-11-1) comes in as the 13th seed.

New Health Director Getting to Know Watertown, Sees Current Concerns, Others Down the Road

Watertown’s new director of health comes to town with more than 40 years of experience in public health. After arriving two months ago, he said he believes Watertown has a commitment to public health, and hopes the department can move from one that is reactive to a proactive one. 

Larry Ramdin comes to Watertown after 11 years as the Health Agent in the Salem. Before that the Arlington resident worked in Reading and Newton. He was drawn to the position in Watertown. “This is a wonderful opportunity,” Ramdin said.

Meet the Artists and See Their Work at Plumbing Museum Exhibit

The Plumbing Museum’s artists in residence will show their artwork during an exhibit at the Watertown museum, and an opening reception will be held on Nov. 1, 2018. New works by Jeff Chandler and Chloe Feldman Emison, who are the museum’s fall artists in residence. Chandler’s medium is wood, while Feldman Emison primarily works in ink and watercolors. The event will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov.
