Watertown Cable Host Adds a Touch of Hollywood to His Show

The host of a local cable show added a dose of Hollywood to his upcoming shows when he hosted an actor who has been in dozens of shows, including The Walking Dead, CSI and Hawaii Five-0.

Last week, Fred Grandinetti sat in the kitchen of his Watertown home with Cuyle Carvin after the pair shot some scenes for Grandinetti’s Watertown Cable Access TV show, Drawing with Fred. They also stopped by The Comic Stop on Main Street to sign some comic books drawn by Grandinetti featuring Carvin. Carvin came up from Atlanta to be in the show. He moved there from Los Angeles because the number of shows and movies being made in Georgia has increased greatly and it improved his odds of getting parts. “They say you get one part out of 50 or 60 auditions,” Carvin said.

Local Author’s Book Goes Back in Time to See What Watertown Square Looked Like

Watertown Square may have changed significantly over the past decade, but local author Cara Marcus found out how the area near the Charles River truly transformed from an industrial center centuries ago to the commercial downtown, while researching her book Watertown Square Through Time. The heart of Watertown Square, the grassy Delta, once was the site of a grist mill where farmers brought their grain to be ground. Where a parking lot for the MBTA sits on Galen Street used to be a soap factory in the later 1800s. The book goes back to the 1630s, Marcus said. She also stated she was most surprised by how industrial the area used to be was centuries ago.

Watertown High School Grad Taking His Game to the Next Level at Bentley

Former Watertown High School baseball player Austin Farry has continued his career on the diamond at nearby Bentley University.

While at Watertown High School he also played football and hockey, and served as captain for all three sports his senior year. He was a member of the 2015 State Championship winning hockey team and played in the Shriner’s Football Game and Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Association all-star game. After not getting much time on the field in his freshman year, Farry — an outfielder for the Falcons — has seen a lot of playing time in his junior year and has a career batting average of over .260. This season, through 24 games, Farry has a .256 batting average, 22 hits (including two doubles), 15 runs, and eight RBIs. Watertown News caught up with Farry to see how life is at Bentley.

In Aftermath of Watertown Shootout, Police Created Group to Help Officers Deal with on the Job Stress

Thursday, April 19, 2018, marked the fifth anniversary of the day that Watertown Police faced the Boston Marathon Bombers in a shootout on the streets of East Watertown, but at the Watertown Police Station there was little fanfare to mark the day.

“It’s another day at work, here,” said Police Chief Michael Lawn, who added that officers were treated to breakfast by H & K Insurance. The department’s roster of uniformed personnel in 2018 includes all the officers involved in the shootout five years ago, Lawn said, despite the fact that they faced suspects armed with guns and pressure-cooker bombs in action that lasted about eight minutes. Nationally, officers involved in shooting while on duty have a much higher rate of leaving the job, but Watertown has managed to beat the odds. “Why? Who’s to say?”
