Pearl Harbor Remembered 76 Years Later by Watertown’s Veterans

In honor of the American servicemen lost at Pearl Harbor 76 years ago, Watertown veteran Ralph Ricci threw a wreath into the Charles River on Thursday afternoon. The wreath laying was part of the Pearl Harbor Commemoration held at the dock in Watertown Square Thursday. Ricci was still a boy when the attacks occurred in 1941, but he has a clear memory. “We didn’t have TV then. Back then there was movie theater over the bridge (on Galen Street) and I was coming out of there and a kid was yelling ‘Extra!

School Committee Wants to End Night Practices for WHS Athletes, Looking at Field Uses

With Watertown High School athletes regularly practicing until 8 p.m. or even 9 p.m., the School Committee seeks a solution to get them home at a reasonable time using the fields currently available in town.

Before the Victory Field stadium area got artificial turf, teams played at different fields around town. Now most fall and spring sports use the artificial turf, while some teams that would prefer to use grass are limited to using the turf due to circumstances and facility constraints. In November, the School Committee’s Athletic Subcommittee discussed the issue and came up with a motion to ask the Town to address the field constraints to enable students to finish practice by 6:30 p.m., said School Committee Vice Chair Kendra Foley who chairs the Athletic Subcommittee, at Monday’s School Committee meeting. “Student athletes have practice schedules that too often are too late. This is caused by a lack of appropriate field space,” Foley said.

School Committee Concerned About Watertown’s MCAS Scores

Fewer than half of Watertown elementary school students scored in “meet expectations” or higher on the state’s standardized test in 2017, and in many cases scores in the Watertown Public Schools lagged behind the state average. The results concerned members of the School Committee, who heard a presentation on the scores on Monday night. Assistant Superintendent for Teaching, Learning and Assessment Theresa McGuinness noted that elementary school students took the “next generation” MCAS last spring. The year before they took the PARCC Test and before that they took the original MCAS. Watertown’s results followed a similar trend as the state average.

Watertown Toy Drive Gets Help from Local Chef, Needs More Assistance This Year

The effort to make sure that every child in town receives a gift for Christmas, one organized by members of the Watertown Police and Fire departments, got a helping hand from one of Watertown’s culinary stars, and the drive needs an extra hand this year.

On Monday afternoon, Chef Mike Fucci presented a check for $1,000 to the Whooley Foundation, the group that organizes the toy drive in town during the holidays each year. Fucci, who runs Chef Mike’s Kitchen and has been featured multiple times on Food Network, does a lot of work for charities, especially during the holidays. He will be cooking a meal for 1,000 people at the New England Center and Home for Veterans later this month. This is the first year, however, that he has donated to the Whooley Foundation. “I didn’t know about the toy drive, otherwise I would have done it a lot sooner,” Fucci said.
