Folk Singer Cosy Sheridan Performing at First Parish Church

This month’s Tremedal Concert features folk singer Cosy Sheridan. The concert organizers wrote:

She came to prominence in 1992 when she won the songwriting contest at The Kerrville Folk Festival and The Telluride Bluegrass Festival. The Boston Globe wrote, “She is now being called one of the best new singer/songwriters,” upon release of her CD Quietly Led on Waterbug Records. Her concerts are wide-ranging explorations: love songs for adults and practical philosophy for  a complicated world. She has written about the stock market crash of 2008 and fall-out from uranium mining in the American southwest.

Watertown Field Hockey Holds On to Early Lead to Win State Semifinal

BRAINTREE – Dennis-Yarmouth gave the Watertown High School field hockey team a run for their money, but the Raiders made an early goal stick as they won 1-0 the State Semifinal and are on their way to their ninth straight MIAA Div. 2 State Final. From the first whistle, the Dolphins showed they could threaten the Watertown net, and had two early corners, but the Raiders took the ball down the the field and senior Sydney Poulin got the space she needed to put the ball in the back of the D-Y net 5 minutes into the game. “(Poulin) just kept staying with the play and found her opening. It’s nice to get that early and to hang on,” said Watertown field hockey coach Eileen Donahue.

See What Mascot the School Committee Chose to Represent Watertown High School

The School Committee selected Watertown High School’s new mascot, or logo: a shield with a large W and Raiders written across it. The Committee unanimously chose the shield from the four concepts brought forward by the Watertown High School Mascot Screening Committee in October. Other ideas were a knight on a horse, a knight behind a shield and a knight’s helmet. Town Council President Mark Sideris proposed that the shield be the choice. “We’re not going to make everybody happy tonight, so we have to make the decision that is best for the Watertown Schools,” Sideris said.

Three Raiders Sign Letters to Continue Playing Sport in College

Three outstanding Watertown High School athletes made it official Monday, they will be taking their game to the next level. Two field hockey player and a track and cross country runner signed their letters of intent during a ceremony in the Watertown High School Gym. Jonna Kennedy
Watertown’s field hockey goalie Jonna Kennedy will be playing for Boston College next year. She has been part of three state championships and hopes to win another one this week. Watertown field hockey coach Eileen Donahue said her goalie played both for the varsity and JV her freshman year. Sometimes playing with such a talented team in front of her can mean little action, but Kennedy responds when called upon.

Two Funeral Homes Offering Reward for Identity of Cemetery Vandals

Two area funeral homes have joined together to offer a $2,000 reward for the identity of the person or people who knocked over a statue and several headstones at St. Patrick’s Cemetery last week. On Nov. 7, the vandalism was discovered. Along with seven tipped headstones a statue on the monument to the Marist Missionary Sisters was knocked over and shattered.

Open House at Watertown High School, Superintendent Coffees

Watertown’s Superintendent of Schools Dede Galdston announced that parents are invited to an open house at Watertown High School to meet teachers and find out programs offered by the school. Also, she will be hosting a pair of Superintendent’s Coffees where parents and residents can speak with her in an informal setting. Galdston sent out the following information:

Watertown High School is hosting an Open House on Monday, November 20, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. This is an excellent opportunity for Watertown families with students in grades 7 and 8 to visit with High School teachers and students in a variety of content areas. Families will learn about the variety of exciting programs and opportunities available at Watertown High School. I will be holding two superintendent’s coffees, one on Wednesday, November 15 at 9:00 a.m. and again on Thursday, November 16 at 7:00 p.m. Both of the coffees will be held in the Innovation Lab, 3rd Floor, Phillips Administration Building.

Organized Walk Around Mount Auburn Cemetery Hosted by Health Department

The final Watertown Walks Program of the year, hosted by the Watertown Health Department, will be this week at the Mount Auburn Cemetery. The Health Department sent out the following information:

Join us this Wednesday, November 15, from 12:00-1:00 p.m. for a scenic walk through the historic Mount Auburn Cemetery. Participants will meet at the entrance to the cemetery at 580 Mt. Auburn St., Cambridge, at 12:00 p.m. Walking shoes/sneakers and comfortable, warm clothing recommended. Co-sponsored by:

Watertown Senior Community Honors Its Residents for Veterans Day

Nearly a dozen residents of a senior living community in Watertown received United State flag pins in honor of their military service in a ceremony held just days before Veteran’s Day. The Residence at Watertown Square wanted to do something to honor those who had served their country, and they found that there are 11 people in their community who served in the military or helped the war effort. Four branches of the military and the U.S. Red Cross were represented at the event on Thursday. The honorees were presented pins by two members of the Watertown Police Department who are themselves veterans. The ceremony came as a surprise.
