WHS Sports: 4 Raiders Teams in State Tournament Action Over the Weekend

This weekend,  Watertown High School had teams playing in the football, field hockey, boys soccer and volleyball state tournaments. 
Volleyball
The Watertown High School volleyball team cliched its first state tournament birth ever during the last regular season match. The Raiders (11-9) then had another first, claiming their first tourney win by sweeping host West Roxbury 3-0 last Thursday. Watertown will travel to take on Middlesex League rival Burlington (18-3) on Monday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. in the North Section Div. 2 quarterfinal.

LETTER: Resident Concerned With Incivility of Debate Over the CPA

To the Editor:

Though reasonable people can disagree on the CPA, I urge my Watertown neighbors to exercise their civic pride and vote “Yes” on Question 5. Let’s give CPA a try and see what we can accomplish together to better our community. We can withdraw from the program if the results aren’t satisfactory. Presently Watertown is at a critical juncture when the physical landscape of our community is changing drastically. A strategic investment in preservation and open space will help us pass on a more livable town to those who follow.

Groups Opposing the CPA May Have Missed Campaign Finance Reporting Deadline

It appears two groups opposing the Community Preservation Act may have violated the state’s campaign finance laws by missing the first deadline to report campaign contributions, but the law is long and confusing. 

For candidates for elected office – local or state – the reporting times are eight days before the election, eight days after, 30 days following the election and Jan. 20 of the next year. For political committees there are different reporting days. However, neither the Concerned Watertown Homeowners nor the Watertown Strong Schools group are political committees, since they did not form to support or oppose a candidate or ballot measure. They appear to fit under the Section 22 of the law applying to individuals or corporations making contributions.

Watertown Beats Newburyport, Moves on to North Section Football Final

The Raiders kept on rolling through the MIAA football playoffs Friday night with a 27-10 victory over Newburyport in the North Section semifinal. Watertown (8-1) got two touchdowns from senior co-captain Vasken Kebabjian in the win at Victory Field on Friday night. The first came in the first quarter when he caught an 8-yard pass from senior quarterback Deon Smith to stake a 7-0 lead. Newburyport (3-5) got a second quarter field goal, but the Raiders got to touchdowns to lead 20-3 at half. Senior Zach Rimsa scored from one-yard out, and then Kebabjian got his second ran one in from 28 yards out.

Second Half Scoring Burst Pushes Watertown Field Hockey Past Weston

The Raiders had a game on their hands for the first 30 minutes of the North Section field hockey quarterfinal Friday afternoon against Weston, leading just 1-0. However, the first minute of the second half set the tone for the rest of the game. Watertown senior Aurora Fidler scored just 56 seconds in to the second half on a pass from Lauren Petrillo, which doubled the Raiders’ lead. Senior Kourtney Kennedy scored the team’s lone first half goal with an assist from sophomore Gabby Venezia. Next it was the underclassmen’s turn to add to Watertown’s total.

Signs have popped up around Watertown this fall, literature has arrived in the mail, and ads have appeared in newspapers and online, all regarding Watertown’s Question 5 – whether the town should adopt the Community Preservation Act. The CPA would add a 2 percent surcharge to local property taxes, both residential and commercial, to create a fund for affordable housing, open space and recreation, and historic preservation and the town would receive some matching fund from the state. Like most town elections, the majority of the funding comes from people and groups in Watertown, but some has come from groups based out of town and even out of state. In the campaign finance report filed by Invest in Watertown, the backers of the Yes on 5 campaign, 26 Watertown residents contributed along with Newton-based Metro West Collaborative Development (which gave $500), whose executive director lives in Watertown and works to build and create affordable housing in communities west of Boston. In total, the group raised $9,822.
