March 11, 5:55 p.m.: A woman upset with a group of teens playing basketball on Olcott Street reportedly came out to threaten them so they would stop. The women came out holding a can of Budweiser, and said. “I am going to let my dogs out. I want to see you run.”
In their effort to get funding from the state to build a new high school, Watertown school officials toured a project in a town that was was successful in getting into the program. This week, the School Committee voted to have Superintendent Jean Fitzgerald submit an application to the Massachusetts School Building Authority to renovate of rebuild Watertown High School. To prepare for the application process, a number of School Committee members, school administrators and members of the town government went to Lexington’s Estabrook Elementary School to participate in the MSBA’s “Tale of a School” presentation. The three-story school replaced a traditional one-story building, said School Committee Chairman John Portz. School Committee member Kendra Foley said she had four major take aways from the presentation:
Districts need to know who they serve and where they are looking to go as a district
Districts need to be willing to make a strategic investments, both as district and as a community
The community really needs strong teamwork between the town and the school district to make the project work – most projects include joint facilities between the school and town
School design should be driven by teaching and learning in the classroom, not other way around
The district needs to include certain things in its plans, said School Committee member Elizabeth Yusem, but that should not stop officials from thinking big.
One more win. That’s all that stands between the seniors on the Watertown High School girls basketball team reaching their goal made years ago to win the state championship. The Raiders have their shot in Saturday’s MIAA Div. 2 State Final against Longmeadow. The game will be played at 4:30 p.m. at Springfield College (follow the game live on Watertown News.) The title would also be Watertown’s first in girls basketball.
Video games littered Arsenal Street after a shoplifting suspect tried to get rid of merchandise he allegedly stole as he ran from Watertown Police.
On March 10 at 3:37 p.m., security at Best Buy flagged down a police officer after spotting a man putting an Xbox game system in his backpack, said Watertown Police Lt. James O’Connor. The suspect, later identified as Luis Rolando Triolet Jr., was then seen going into a bathroom and security believed he had numerous pieces of merchandise. “The officer observed two males in the bathroom, one matching the description of the suspect,” O’Connor said. “When the officer spoke to the arrestee he became nervous, his hands were shaking, he began sweating. The suspect began walking away and then ran out the front door and into traffic on Arsenal Street.”
A community meeting will be held to discuss the proposed renovation of the athenahealth campus at the Arsenal on the Charles.
The meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 29 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Coolidge School Apartments, 319 Arlington St. Several new buildings have been planned, as well as a large new parking garage on the west side of the complex. This has been a sore point for nearby neighbors who said the last version included a garage that is too tall and too close to North Beacon Street. Watertown Police arrested a Brighton man who allegedly shoved an officer and tried to run away after he appeared to be passed out from taking drugs. On March 7 at 7:03 p.m. an officer went into the bathroom near the food court in the Arsenal Mall, where a man was passed out and appeared to have blood on his face, said Watertown Police Lt. James O’Connor. “The officer asked if the man needed medical assistance. The man shoved the officer to the ground, and ran out of the bathroom,” O’Connor said. “The officer observed that the arrestee had likely ingested narcotics.”
They may only be five ounces in weight and seven inches long, but there will be a lot of beautifully carved and decorated wood race cars zooming down a 30 foot, 3-lane track in close to 3 seconds as the annual Sons of Liberty District (S.O.L.D.) Pinewood Derby will be run on Saturday, April 2 at the Arsenal Mall in Watertown. The Spirit of Adventure Council of the Boy Scouts of America has chartered various organizations within the fourteen communities of Waltham, Watertown, Belmont, Arlington, Medford, Malden, Melrose, Revere, Chelsea, Everett, East Boston, Charlestown, Somerville and Cambridge to deliver the Scouting Program to boys in the first- thru fifth-grades through 27 different Cub Scout Packs operating within the 14 communities. First-grade boys (called “Tigers”), second-grade boys (called “ Wolves”), third-grade boys (called “Bears”), fourth-grade boys (known as “first-year Webelos”) and fifth-grade boys (known as “second-year Webelos”) have already won at their local competition level; now they will be representing their Packs, their chartered organizations, and their communities as they Do Their Best to show how much fun Scouting can be. The top three placers at each level will be awarded trophies to take back to their Packs. Every Cub Scout who represents his Pack at the District Pinewood Derby receives a distinctive “2016 Spirit of Adventure Council Pinewood Derby Participant” patch to wear proudly on his uniform as a temporary activity patch.
