Watertown Police Catch Man Behind Home Break Ins

Watertown Police arrested a man who allegedly broke into three homes over the past couple weeks. The man, identified as Michael Mancuso, is suspected of breaking into a home on Standish Road and stole a guitar, and was spotted by a York Avenue resident in his living room (click here to see more details). On Aug. 28 at 1:51 a.m. the man was spotted walking up to the back door of a home on Bellevue Road, said Watertown Sgt. Thomas Grady.

Warren Tolman Gets Major Endorsement in AG Race

Watertown’s Warren Tolman got a major endorsement in his race for Attorney General when Gov. Deval Patrick said Tolman has his vote. Tolman has received a number of endorsements, but none bigger than the state’s top elected official. “I am endorsing Warren because I know from his campaign and from a deep personal relationship with him that he will be an activist AG, and I am excited about that,” Patrick said. “From gun safety to health care costs to consumer protection and civil rights, I want an AG who will not only enforce the law effectively, but also use the influence of the office strategically to improve the lives and prospects of Massachusetts people and small businesses. Warren Tolman will be that kind of leader.”

Tolman thanked the governor for his support. “I am so grateful, and so honored, to have the support of Governor Deval Patrick,” Tolman said.

OBIT: Beatrice (Martel) Kelly, 101, Long Time Watertown Resident

Beatrice (Martel) Kelly passed away on Monday evening at the age of 101. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Church of Saint Patrick, Watertown on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014 at 9 a.m. Mrs. Kelly passed away in the Maristhill Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Waltham surrounded by family. A daughter of the late Joseph & Jennie (Terrio) Martel, born in Newmarket, N.H., and grew up in Newton where she went to Newton schools. In 1933 she married her husband George and lived in Brighton before moving to Watertown where she lived for 64 years and raised five children.

OBIT: Robert Aiden Doyle, 77, Former Youth Sports Coach

Robert Aiden Doyle of Watertown died Friday Aug. 29, 2014 after a lengthy illness at the age of 77. Doyle died at the Alliance Healthcare Center in Braintree, where he had been a resident for several years. He is the devoted Father of Sandra D. Curlander and her husband James of Bellevue, Wash., Robert A. Doyle, Jr. of Needham, and James C. Doyle of South Boston. Loving grandfather of Siena Curlander. Dear brother of Sandra J. Doyle of Watertown and the late Irene A. Doyle.

Ready for the Start of School – Here’s Some Important Info

The Watertown Public Schools open on Thursday, Sept. 4, and here are some announcements from school officials. Superintendent Jean Fitzgerald sent out the following information:

STUDENT REGISTRATION

For registration at the appropriate school, new students should bring their birth certificate, school records or report cards (if records from their previous school were not already transferred), proof of residency (e.g. lease or utility bill) and complete health records indicating all required immunizations were received. These immunizations are a requirement of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and must be received before the student may attend school or be enrolled. A parent or guardian should accompany the child to school.

Trampoline Complex Coming to Watertown

A 37,000-square foot trampoline complex will be opening in the Westside of Watertown later this year. The facility will be called Launch Watertown and will be located at 1 River St., just off Pleasant street near the Waltham line. It will be the largest complex run by Launch Franchising. A large part of the floor space will be covered by adjoining trampolines, and there will also be places for “Xtreme” dodgeball, and a Free Fall activity, where people can jump from a town into an inflatable stunt bag, according to the report on Broadway World. The Launch Watertown website also shows trampoline basketball courts and a foam pit, as well as an area to eat which has flat screen TVs and an arcade. Launch Watertown seeks to open by December 2014.

Watertown Has a Second Dog Park!

Dogs now have a second place to run and play off leash in Watertown, the Recreation Department announced. Watertown residents can take their dogs to the dog park at the Alta at the Estate residential complex on the Westside. The complex is located at 100 Woodview Way, off Waltham Street, in Watertown. It is located across from the Gore Estate. In the spring, Watertown opened its first dog park at Howe Park on Pleasant Street, less than a mile west of Watertown Square.

Watertown Student Studying Abroad in Denmark

Watertown’s Sam Allen will be headed overseas to take part in implementing a sustainable energy system. Allen, a third-year student at College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine, will be heading to Denmark with a class taught by COA faculty and led by COA students in a collaboration with the Rockland-based Island Institute under the auspices of a new philanthropic arm called The Fund for Maine Islands, according to the announcement from the college. During the student trip Sept. 22 through Oct. 4, to Samsø Energy Academy on Samsø Island, Denmark, Allen will study firsthand how Samsø, a farming and tourist community, became carbon negative through efficiency upgrades, wind and solar power production, biomass heating and other elements of a renewable energy portfolio, the announcement said.
