Raiders Remain Undefeated in Football After Win Over Melrose

Watertown put its undefeated season on the line against a team that beat them last last year, but this year they came out victorious. The Raiders held on to beat Melrose 28-26 at Victory Field on Friday night. The team was lead by Nick Giordano and Zack Rimsa, who each scored two touchdowns, according to the Boston Globe report. Town Looking at Raising Age of Buying Cigarettes to 21

A public hearing will be held to discuss raising the legal age of tobacco sales in Watertown. The current minimum age to buy tobacco products in Watertown is 19, but the proposal from the Board of Health would raise it to 21. The hearing will be held on Monday, Oct. 20 at 8:15 p.m. in the Council Chamber in Town Hall, 149 Main St. The town has two regulations for tobacco, and the Board of Health also seeks to combine them into one called “Regulation Regarding Smoking and the Sale and Use of Tobacco and Nicotine Delivery Products.”

“We hope this will eliminate any confusion finding all of the tobacco regulations in one place,” said an announcement by the Board of Health.

Man Arrested for Having Multiple Warrants

Police went to Church Lane early on the morning of Oct. 1 for a disturbance involving two men, one of whom was wanted on multiple arrest warrants. One of the men gave officers a false name, but police were able to determine his real identity, said Watertown Police Lt. Michael Lawn. They also found he had three outstanding warrants. Adam J. Swindell of Watertown was arrested on three warrants from Salem District Court – one for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, one for threatening to commit a crime and one for shoplifting, Lawn said.

OBIT: Joan M. O’Reilly, Watertown High Class of 1951

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Church of Saint Patrick, Watertown on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014 for Joan M. (Lorenzen) O’Reilly at 11 a.m.

Mrs. O’Reilly died in the Oak Knoll Health Care Center in Framingham on Saturday evening after lengthy illness. She was 81. Born in Cambridge, she was a graduate of Watertown High School, Class of 1951. She worked as a receptionist for several work places. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard P. O’Reilly.

Teachers Added to Reduce Class Sizes, Other Positions Unfilled

Each of Watertown’s elementary schools received a new teacher to help reduce the size of classes, but the district did not hire all the teachers it had hoped. Superintendent Jean Fitzgerald discussed school enrollment and new hires at Monday’s School Committee meeting. Hosmer School has 850 students this fall, Lowell School has 388 students and there are 312 children at Cunniff School. “At each school, class size was something very important to parents – and to all of us,” Fitzgerald said. “Each school got an additional general education teacher to help with class size.”

Fallen Firefighter Ed Walsh to be Honored at WHS Football Game

On Friday night, Watertown native and fallen Boston Firefighter Ed Walsh will be honored at the Watertown High School football game. Lt. Walsh died fighting a fire in the Back Bay in March. His funeral was held at St. Patrick’s Church in Watertown and thousands of firefighters from around the country came to pay tribute (see more here). Other WHS sports teams have paid tribute to Walsh, who attended the high school, including the baseball and lacrosse teams.

The game will be at 7 p.m. on Oct.

Tufts Health Plan Foundation Awards $880K in Grants

Organizations in Massachusetts and Rhode Island received more than $880,000 during the second cycle of the Tufts Health Plan Foundation’s grant awards. More than 25 percent of grants this cycle are for programs which have not been funded previously by the Tufts Health Plan Foundation, according to an announcement from the foundation. These include intergenerational programs in Somerville and Worcester, evidence-based Tai Chi and Fall Prevention programs in Boston and Johnston, RI, and a new driving assessment program for older adults through Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod. Also receiving funding for the first time this cycle is the Massachusetts Association of Councils on Aging’s Aging Mastery program, which was created by the National Council on Aging to empower participants to make small but impactful changes in their health behaviors. The program will be offered in nine Massachusetts communities selected through a bid process.

Boylston Properties Discusses Plans for Verizon Building

Boylston Properties plans to turn the Verizon Building behind the Watertown Mall into office space. The owner of large parcels on the Eastside of Watertown said it plans to turn the building at 480C Boylston St. into a 160,000 square-foot office building, according to a story on Banker & Tradesman’s website.
