Watertown Calls Snow Emergency, City Facilities Closed Friday

The following announcement was provided by the City of Watertown:

The City of Watertown has announced a sow emergency for Friday, Feb. 25 with a storm expected to drop several inches of snow headed toward the area. Also, City Hall, Library and Senior Center will be closed on Friday due to the storm. The City sent out the following announcement:

The Superintendent of Public Works is declaring a Snow Emergency effective 1:00 AM, Friday, February 25, 2022. Watertown is expecting upwards of 8-inches of snow Friday.

With over 170 people attending your first public meeting on Alexandria’s plan for redevelopment of the Watertown Mall, we know that you are aware of how important this project is to the community of Watertown. We also know that Alexandria has committed to being  “a mission-driven company dedicated to making a positive and lasting impact on the world…”  Your website states that “environmental, social, and governance (ESG) is core to our DNA.”  We have high hopes for this project. Watertown Faces Climate Change, a local climate action group (see affiliations below)  calls on you to do the work to make these buildings Net Zero Energy/Platinum LEED. We know that Alexandria has the capacity to build to these standards because you have done so at 325 Binney St. in Cambridge.

Watertown Community Foundation Offering Grants for Youth Sports Leagues

Youth Sports League Grants will support team sports organizations that serve Watertown youth to help defray registration costs and increase participation. Examples of programs eligible for Youth Sports League Grants include:

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for a Youth Sports League Grant, organizations must be public entities, nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, or an organization that is affiliated with a 501(c)(3) organization. Organizations must:

Be based in Watertown and serve the town’s residents or, if based outside of Watertown, can document an existing partnership with an organization that directly serves Watertown residents ANDProvide a program or service to the community. Timeline:

February 14 : Call for Applications

March 4 : Applications due to WCF

March 11: Applicants Notified of Grant Decisions

December: Final Grantee Reports Due to WCF

Watertown Artist’s Exhibit “When We Are Silent” Showing in Needham

Pieces from Watertown artist Ruth Henry’s show “When We Are Silent.” The following announcement was provided by the exhibit organizers:

When We Are Silent is a new solo exhibition by artist Ruth K. Henry on view at the Gorse Mill Gallery (31 Thorpe Road, Needham MA) from March 7th, 2022 to March 26th, 2022. Opening reception will be held on Saturday, March 12th from 6-9 pm. Masks are required. Food and drinks will be available outdoors.

Watertown Democrats to Elect Delegates for State Convention

The following announcement was provided by the Watertown Democratic Town Committee:

On Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 1:00 p.m., Democrats will convene virtually and in person at the Watertown Library to elect 27 delegates and 5 alternates to represent Watertown at the 2022 State Democratic Convention. The caucus will take place in line with public health guidance and attendees may participate remotely by registering at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEpcuCopj8iG9A6YaiZEHk91FtCwwXl9f9_. Registered and pre-registered Democrats in Watertown 16 years old by February 4, 2022 may vote and be elected as delegates or alternates during the caucus. Youth (age 16 to 35), people with disabilities, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ+ community not elected as delegates or alternates are encouraged to apply to be add-on delegates at the caucus or by visiting massdems.org/convention. The 2022 Convention will be a hybrid convention, with in-person proceedings taking place alongside virtual participation options on June 3 and 4 at the DCU Center in Worcester.

The Armenian Museum of America recently announced its Ninth Online Concert featuring an exclusive performance by the Artyom Manukyan Quartet. This Armenia-based electro-jazz ensemble features Arman Mnatsakanyan (drums), Arman Peshtmaljyan (keyboards), Karen Mamikonyan (keyboards), and Artyom Manukyan (cello). The concert will be shown online on Sunday, Feb.

Small Saves Spreads the Joy of Hockey in This Week’s Cartoon

James DeMarco grew up in Watertown and became a goaltender at age 5. It’s his life’s passion to stand between the pipes and keep the puck out of the net. Combining this with the love of cartooning Small Saves emerged in 1991 and took on a life of his own. “To play goal–then come home and draw Small Saves — is my ideal definition of a good day.”
