New Day captured the 2018 Watertown Summer Basketball League title, but the team lost game 1 of the 2019 finals against HBC. NOTE: Wednesday’s Papas Elite game 2 has been postponed to Thursday due to rain:
The Watertown Summer Basketball League’s Papas Elite playoff finals series tipped off Tuesday, and the Legends League semifinals got underway. The Recreation Department provided they following account of Tuesday’s action. In game one of the Papas Elite Finals, HBC proved why they were the top seed throughout the year by defeating defending champion New Day by the score of 63-52. The game was decided relatively early in the second half, as New Day struggled to make shots, while intensive defense and great ball movement by HBC sealed the win.

The Watertown Senior Center is jumping with activities in September, including classes to improve balance, meet your state senator and find out about using rideshares like Uber and Lyft. The Watertown Senior Center sent out its monthly newsletter. See the highlights below:

Keep Fit with Joanna returns on Thursdays and Tai Chi with Marie and Strength and Balance with Pearl return on Fridays.

James DeMarco grew up in Watertown and became a goaltender at age 5. It’s his life’s passion to stand between the pipes and keep the puck out of the net. Congresswoman Katherine Clark’s office is excited to announce that the Massachusetts 5th district is moving forward with the Congressional App Challenge (CAC), an app competition for students in middle and high school. On Friday, Sept. 13 from 4-7 p.m., students from the 5th congressional district are invited to participate in a coding workshop held at Hatch Makerspace, 20 Summer St. Watertown, MA. Hatch is a free community workshop managed by the Watertown Free Public Library that offers training and equipment, including 3D printing, laser cutting, sewing, soldering, robotics, and woodworking. Senator Will Brownsberger announced that he is seeking nominees to participate in the 83rd Citizens’ Legislative Seminar (CLS) on Tuesday, Oct. 22 and Wednesday, Oct. 23 at the Massachusetts State House in Boston. CLS is a semi-annual educational seminar geared towards adults of all ages interested in learning more about state government and the legislative process.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has announced that the service plaza on Route 128/I-95 southbound in Newton will be closed from 10 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 14, through 12 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 15. This short-term impact is necessary in order to allow crews to safely and effectively conduct milling operations in this area. Advanced warning signs will be deployed to notify drivers of the closure of this facility. MassDOT encourages members of the public to plan ahead and utilize alternative service plazas during this period.
