Watertown Art Association Presents a Free Interactive Art Demonstration

Come and enjoy an exciting interactive demonstration of fluid alcohol inks with Liz Filipancic at the Watertown Art Association meeting, Saturday, Oct. 6, 2-4 p.m. at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 9 Russell Ave., Watertown. “Liz’s art is so bright and evocative – it just makes you happy,” said Paula Simpson, owner of Carry Out Cafe & Catering  in Newburyport where Liz has shown her art and jewelry in a solo exhibition. “Viewers can use their imagination, seeing different elements in the pops of color that flow throughout her work.”

Liz started painting later in life, and discovered a technique that really energizes her creativity – fluid alcohol inks on a synthetic paper called Yupo. “The unpredictable reactions of the inks and their flow are inspiring.

Volunteers Wanted to Help Out at Mosesian Center for the Arts

Mosesian Center for the Arts welcomes you to become a part of this exciting art
community. Thousands of artists, patrons, students and guests visit MCA every week. Reliable volunteers are an important element in the center’s success throughout the year. There are a variety of volunteer positions available: Ushers, classroom assistants and greeters. Volunteers will be trained in their responsibilities and will be eligible to earn volunteer credits that can be applied to a class or ticket purchase (Mosesian productions only).

Affordable Housing in Watertown On the Agenda for Council Subcommittee

The Town Council’s Committee on Human Services provided the following announcement:
The Town Council’s Committee on Human Services will continue its discussion of affordable housing at its meeting this Thursday, October 4, at 7:15 p.m. in the Town Council Chambers on the second floor of Town Hall. 
The theme for this meeting is “Affordable Housing Development” and will include presentations by Jennifer Van Campen, Executive Director of MetroWest Collaborative Development, State Representative Michael Connolly, and Steve Magoon, Watertown’s Assistant Town Manager and Director of the Department of Community Development and Planning. Town Councilor Tony Palomba chairs the Committee on Human Services. Councilor Caroline Bays is the Committee’s Vice –Chair, and Councilor Susan Falkoff is the Committee’s Secretary

Community Foundation Seeks Applicants for Healthy Watertown Grants

The following announcement came from the Watertown Community Foundation:

The Watertown Community Foundation (WCF) announces the release of the Fall 2018 Healthy Watertown Grants to support organizations that work to create new or existing programs to keep our community healthy. A total of $10,000 will be distributed through these health grants. Past Healthy Grant awardees have included: Local food pantries; nutrition and meal programs for seniors; programs and services fostering healthy aging; programs designed to combat the opioid crisis and provide services and supports for individuals and families struggling with substance use disorders; and
health-related programs for infants and their families. Eligible organizations may apply for a maximum of $2,500. The average amount awarded will range from $500 to $2,500.

Watertown Residents Can Get a Discount on Home Solar Systems in October

Watertown residents can get a discount on home solar systems during the month of October. October is National Energy Awareness Month. Find Out About Self-Directed Learning at Mosesian Center for the Arts

The following information was provided by Bay State Learning Center:

Your child can become a self-directed learner who explores personal interests, sets goals and makes good use of local resources to spur his/her curiosity and intellectual growth. On Monday Oct. 1, discover how self-directed learning is possible by attending a talk by Blake Boles (www.blakeboles.com) at the Mosesian Arts Center from 7 to 9 p.m. The talk is free and open to the public, and kids from pre-teen through 18 are encouraged to attend with their parents. Self-directed learning can take place during school hours or during non-school hours. It’s an empowering approach that spurs kids to naturally think of the future they want for themselves, and take action, based on what’s meaningful to them.

Watertown Cable Show Honoring Italian Americans in October

The following information was provided by the producers of Watertown Cable’s Drawing With Fred:

In honor of Columbus Day The Watertown Channel will broadcast special episodes of Drawing With Fred featuring two prominent Italian Americans. Doctor Domenic D’Amico, whose dental practice in Watertown celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2018, is featured in the Italian Dentist Show. Program host, Fred Grandinetti, displays a drawing of D’Amico and discusses why he entered the dental field. The Braccio Di Ferro episode features journalist, Nicola Orichuia, co-founder of I AM Books the first Italian-American book store in the country. The popular establishment is located in the North End.
