Watertown Democrats Holding Caucus to Elect Delegates for State Convention

Registered Democrats in Watertown will be holding a caucus at the Watertown Savings Bank Room of the Watertown Free Public Library on Saturday, February 3 at 1 p.m. to elect 24 delegates and five alternates to the 2018 Massachusetts Democratic Convention, the Watertown Democrats announced. This year’s state convention will be held June 1-2 at the DCU Center in Worcester, where thousands of Democrats from across the state will come together to endorse Democratic candidates for statewide office, including Constitutional Officers and a Gubernatorial candidates. “At our 2018 convention, the delegates selected by Watertown Democrats will take part in deciding which statewide candidates will be on the primary ballot this September. The caucus is a great opportunity for people who want to get involved in the process,” said Watertown Democratic Town Committee Chair Steve Owens. The caucus is open to all registered and pre-registered Democrats in Watertown, and the Democratic Committee welcomes first-time participants.

One Book, One Watertown Title for 2018 is ‘Refuge’ by Dina Nayeri

For the 10th year in a row, the Watertown Free Public Library has selected a book for the entire community to read and discuss during the “One Book, One Watertown” celebration. The 2018 selection is the novel Refuge by Dina Nayeri. The Watertown Free Public Library sent out the following announcement:

This year, for the first time, the library is recommending a “read-along” title for younger readers and English language learners: It Ain’t So Awful, Falafel by Firoozeh Dumas. According to librarian Pauli Stern, the WFPL chose Refuge “because of the insight it provides into the bravery and perseverance needed to overcome the obstacles of language, culture, and bureaucracy, while striving to find a feeling of belonging and home.”

Author Dina Nayeri, who lives in London, will visit Watertown on Thursday, March 1. Nayeri will speak at the WFPL at 7:00 p.m., following a 6:00 p.m. tasting of Persian food from Roksana’s Restaurant.

Mt. Auburn Hospital Auxiliary Hosting 82nd Annual Thursday Morning Talk Series

The 82nd annual Mount Auburn Hospital Auxiliary’s morning lecture series begins this week and features experts in a variety of fields.

Two Watertown Students Accepted as State Leaders in Fight Against Tobacco

Shariel Joseph and Marcus Moore of the Watertown Youth Coalition, sponsored by the Wayside Multi-Service Center, were recently accepted as members of The 84 Movement’s Statewide Leadership Team, WYC announced. To begin in that role, they attended The 84 Movement’s Statewide Leadership Conference in Boston from December 1-3 with other youth leaders from across the Commonwealth. The 84 Movement is a statewide youth tobacco prevention program that fights the tobacco industry’s tactics of making their products sweet, cheap, and easy to get. Joseph and Moore, both juniors at Watertown High School, join 15 other youth to help lead the movement. As members of the Statewide Leadership Team, they will have the opportunity to attend and facilitate workshops, gain skills in public speaking, educate members of their community, and fortify their leadership skills.

Celebrate Winter and Stay Warm at Watertown Mall’s Family Event

Let It Snow event for Kids with the Watertown Family Network at the Watertown Mall on Tuesday, January 23 at 10 a.m.! Join the Watertown Family Network and the Watertown Mall to celebrate winter and keep warm doing fun activities during our Let Is Snow event! There will be songs, stories and surprises for kids of all ages. There will be raffles and treats for all. The Watertown Family Network is a grant-funded program of the Massachusetts Department of Education and care run through the Watertown Public Schools.

Plans to Remove Trees in Watertown Square to be Discussed at Meeting

Some trees that line the Linear Path – the pedestrian way near Town Hall – are planned to be removed. Watertown officials will hold a meeting to discuss the planned tree cutting. The trees sit on the right-of-way for pipe carrying the City of Cambridge’s water supply. The trees proposed to be removed are near Waverley Avenue as well as near Summer Street, according to an announcement about the meeting. An earlier removal of trees in Watertown proved to be controversial, and the removals were halted temporarily.

The 72nd annual Lowell Sun Charities Golden Gloves Championships kicked-off last night in front of an enthusiastic crowd, despite traveling in sub-zero temperature, at historic Lowell Memorial Auditorium with Central New England (Greater Lowell) preliminary-round action that featured 13 exciting men’s and women’s novice class matches. The preliminary round will conclude next Friday night (Jan. 12) at Lowell Memorial Auditorium with novice and open class matches.
