Two Watertown Students Awarded Scholarships by MassBay College

MassBay Community College is pleased to announce 101 students were awarded more than $92,000 in scholarships at its bi-annual Scholarship Awards ceremony, including two from Watertown. The generous donations received by the MassBay Foundation, makes it possible for these 101 students to continue their studies a little easier. Among the students who received these scholarships are single mothers, veterans, first to go to college students, and many more who these scholarships makes all the difference. MassBay students Paul Gorham and Allyson Kazanjian, both from Watertown, were recently honored at MassBay Community College’s Fall Donor Dinner and Scholarship Awards night. Gorham was honored with a General Scholarship and a Health Sciences Scholarship
Kazanjian was honored with a General Scholarship and Merit Scholar Athlete Scholarship

All donations made to the MassBay Foundation go directly to students in the form of scholarships.

Public Invited to Join Watertown Veterans’ Pearl Harbor Observance

On Thursday Dec. 7, 2017, The Watertown Veterans Council will be hosting a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day Ceremony located at the Charles River Dock, Watertown, the Watertown Veterans Office announced. The ceremony will begin at 12 p.m. and last approximately 30 minutes. Please join us in supporting our World War II Veterans as this meaningful event is open to everyone.

Watertown Library’s Democracy Talks Focusing on Future of Voting Rights

The Watertown Free Public Library’s Democracy Talks will host a talk on “The Future of Voting Rights: 2018 and Beyond,” the library announced
During the event, the sixth in the Library’s ongoing series, Professor Rachael Cobb of Suffolk University will talk about what’s at stake in the 2018, according to the event announcement. Cobb is an associate professor and chair of the Government Department at Suffolk. She studies elections, election administration, the electoral politics, civic engagement and political participation. She established the University Pollworkers Project, a non-partisan program designed to recruit college students to serve as poll workers in partnership with the City of Boston’s Election Department. Watertown Artist Receives $15,000 Grant from the Boston Foundation

Maya Erdelyi of Watertown is a recipient of the 2017 Boston Foundation’s Brother Thomas Fellowship, according to Lesley University. A faculty member of Lesley University’s Animation and Motion Media department, Erdelyi will receive a $15,000 unrestricted grant. In addition to helping fund her work, the Brother Thomas Fellowship is an affirming boost for Erdelyi. “They’re recognizing me as someone who’s working hard. It’s encouraging me to continue.

Watertown Group Hosts Presentation on Forced Removal of Native American Children

The World in Watertown announced their upcoming event at First Parish Church on Dec. 7 about the history of White Supremacy and the impact on Native Americans in New England. The group sent out the following information:

Presentation on Origins of White Supremacy in New England: On Thursday, December 7, 2017, World in Watertown is hosting Dr. Mishy Lesser, Watertown resident and learning director of Upstander Project, for a talk entitled “Forced Removal of Native Children and the Origins of White Supremacy in New England.” The talk will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the First Parish of Watertown, 35 Church St., Watertown. Dr. Lesser will screen Upstander Project’s short documentary, First Light, about the Maine Wabanaki Child Welfare Truth and Reconciliation Commission and what the commissioners learned from Wabanaki people who suffered loss of identity and trauma after being taken away by the state’s child welfare system.

Watertown Senior Center Holding Holiday Boutique Next Week

Come down to the Watertown Senior Center to purchase items for the holidays, including handmade knitted items, jewelry, ornaments and holiday décor. Friends of the Watertown Council on Aging Holiday Boutique will be held on Monday, December 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Help Fill an MBTA Bus with Toys, Gifts at Annual Drive at the Watertown Mall

The Watertown Mall and the Mass. Department of Transportation (MassDOT) will host the 17th annual Fill a Bus with Gifts Event, the mall announced. Toys donated by MBTA riders and residents will benefit children at the Action for Boston Community Development, Mass Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the Yawkey Boys & Girls Club of Boston and Heading Home. Donations of new, unwrapped gifts for kids and teens will be collected at the Watertown Mall, 550 Arsenal Street, Watertown now until Wednesday, December 13 at 9 a.m.

Gifts can be dropped off at the RMV, Watertown Mall Management Office, or Santa’s Village. Perkins School Hosting Two Free Holiday Concerts

Perkins School for the Blind will host a pair of holiday concerts which are free and open to the public. The school sent out the following information:
