WHS Athletic Hall of Fame Seeking Nominations for Class of 2017

The Watertown High School Athletic Hall of Fame announced it will continue to accept nominations for this year’s class until March 15. Founded in 1992, the Hall, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, honors individuals and teams who have made significant contributions to the community through their time as student-athletes, or in support of various athletic programs at Watertown High School. This year’s inductees will be honored at a banquet this fall. Recent inductees include former Red Raider greats Casey Bracket, Nick Goodman, Mary, Catherine, Bethany, & Jane Rogers, as well as the 1983 Middlesex League Champion football team. Sign Up to Get Smoke Alarms Installed, Learn Fire Safety from the Red Cross

The American Red Cross, Metro Massachusetts unit, will visit Watertown on Saturday, March 11 as part of its Home Fire Campaign to teach people how to be prepared for home fires and to install smoke alarms where needed. Seven times a day someone in this country dies in a home fire. Countless others suffer injuries. To combat these tragic statistics, the Red Cross has launched a nationwide campaign to reduce the number of deaths and injuries due to home fires by 25 percent. The Home Fire Campaign is happening all over the country and involves Red Cross workers joining with local fire departments and community groups to visit neighborhoods at high risk for fires.

Watertown Group Co-Sponsoring Environmental Action Conference

Watertown Citizens for Peace, Justice and the Environment announced it is co-sponsoring a grassroots environmental action conference that will bring together over 400 activists working to protect their communities’ health and environment. Organized by Toxics Action Center, this year’s 30th annual Local Environmental Action 2017 connects citizens with the information, skills, and experts to effectively advocate for their communities. This year’s keynote speakers are Kandi Mossett and Lois Gibbs. Kandi has been a powerful indigenous leader as well as an environmental justice hero on the frontlines of the fight to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline, and bring visibility to the impact that injustices have on indigenous groups across North America. Lois Gibbs, founder and executive director of the Center for Health, Environment and Justice, has actively played a critical role in the grassroots environmental health movement.

Hear the Songs from ‘Hamilton’ Sung Live at the Mosesian Arts Center

Back by popular demand, The Mosesian Center for the Arts is proud to present another edition of Hamiltunes Boston March 3 and 4! This sing-along, cult phenomenon, based on the hit Broadway Musical Hamilton, returns to the Mosesian Center’s MainStage Theater for an 18+ event (March 3) and a 12+ event (March 4). Hamiltunes features a guided journey through the story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton via the soundtrack to the smash hit musical. Those wishing to attend can register at MosesianArts.org to reserve a seat in the audience or sign up to show off their onstage talents with a vocal performance. Beer, Wine, Drinks, and Snacks will be available for purchase at the Center’s newly opened Mbar for those patrons 21 years of age and older.

Revels Spring Sing: A Family Celebration of the Vernal Equinox

Wave goodbye to winter surrounded by budding forsythia and sprigs of green at Revels’ annual Spring Sing, a family celebration of the vernal equinox. Revels music director Megan Henderson leads the festivities which include lots of communal singing, a seriously funny mummers play (written by Revels artistic director Patrick Swanson), delicious refreshments, a little dancing, plus a visit from that ancient harbinger of spring, the Padstow ‘Obby ‘Oss, all the way from Cornwall, England! Joining in on the fun will be musician and song leader extraordinaire David Coffin, vocalists Louise Grasmere and Jamie Jaffe, The Revels Youth Alumni Chorus, and keyboardist Linda Brown-San Martin. Help us “wake up the earth” with music, dance and song!

Applications Being Accepted for 49th Lt. Paul J. Sullivan Scholarship

The Lieutenant Paul J. Sullivan Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the 49th annual Lt. Paul J. Sullivan Scholarship. The Scholarship Award of $4,000 will be awarded to a deserving high school senior to perpetuate Paul’s memory. There will also be awards for the other finalists. Last year, a total of $18,000 was awarded to seven young men and women. Paul was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Watertown and a graduate of St.

A Funeral Mass for Judith Ann Maurer will be celebrated on Friday, February 24, 2017 at 9 a.m. at the Church of St. Patrick in Watertown. Judith Ann Maurer passed away at the age of 75 on Monday, February 20, 2017 after a long illness. She was the loving daughter of the late Henry A. Maurer & Florence T. (Harrington) Maurer. Dear sister of Paul A. Maurer, David H. Maurer, and Janet Maurer Heitmiller.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday February 25, 2017 in St. Jude’s Church, Waltham at 10:30 a.m. for Mary F. (Harrington) MacRae. Mrs. MacRae passed away in her home on Feb. 21, 2017 after a long period of declining health. She was the daughter of the late Joseph C. and Rose (McCarron) MacRae. She was 86.
