OBIT: Fran McCarran Jr., 92, former MDC Director of Parks, Navy Veteran

Francis H. “Fran” McCarran, Jr., 92, of Watertown passed away peacefully at home on Sunday August 21, 2016. Fran and his wife, Helen F. (Cronin) McCarran enjoyed almost 69 years of love, fun and family together. Helen will forever cherish his nightly “Good night my love, I love you thank you for taking such good care of me.” He is also survived by his dear brother, Paul J. McCarran, who’s nightly phone call to discuss the Red Sox and always an “I Love You” meant the world to Fran. They were blessed with five children Francis H. McCarran III and his wife Joanne, William J. McCarran and his wife Lorraine, Linda M.

Public Can Attend Panel’s Deliberations on Ballot Measure for Legalizing Marijuana

A 20-person voter panel will participate in the pilot program of the Massachusetts Citizens’ Initiative Review (CIR,) Aug. 25 to 28 at The Atrium School in Watertown, when the group will consider all aspects of Question 4, the marijuana legalization ballot question, organizers announced. During the deliberations, voter participants will talk with advocates on both sides of the ballot question under review as well as neutral experts. The results of the deliberations will be captured in a Citizens’ Statement that includes key findings, as well as arguments for and against the passage of the initiative. Trained moderators will guide the group. On July 12, the CIR Advisory Board selected the regulation and taxation of marijuana ballot question for voters to review.

Vegetarian Food Truck and Craft Beer Festival Coming to Watertown

Food Truck Festivals of America is pleased to announce the Vegetarian Food Truck and Craft Beer Festival, coming to The Arsenal Project in Watertown (485 Arsenal St.) on Saturday, Sept. 10 from noon-6 p.m. (VIP hour from 11 a.m.-noon). The festival will feature 15+ food trucks and 30+ of the region’s best craft beers. Food and 12oz craft beers will be available for purchase from Noon-6 PM (11 am- Noon VIP). From 3-6 p.m. unlimited beer sampling will be available for an additional fee where attendees are able to sample 2 oz. craft beers. The trucks will be serving up a variety of vegetarian favorites, including Asian fusion, salads, falafel, hummus, and other Mediterranean specialties, soft serve treats, warm hand pies, and much more.

Registration Open for Girl Scouts, Volunteers Also Wanted

Attention Watertown Families: The Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts are ramping up for our new 2016-2017 Membership Year and we have so many opportunities for young girls to get involved with Girl Scouts in Watertown. The Girl Scouts have troops starting at elementary schools across the town, as well as community-wide troops for girls to get more involved and discover, connect, and take action in their communities. The scouts plan to stop by schools, community events, and filter information throughout the town this fall. Watertown Man Helps Raise Money for Breast Cancer Research at Gala

Scheinbart was among the nearly 400 breast cancer survivors and supporters who were inspired and motivated for the fundraising walk set for Oct. 2 at the DCR Hatch Shell in Boston. Sicilian Theater Company’s First Production Debuts in Watertown

Trinacria Theatre Company presents its inaugural theatrical production, La Storia di Colapesce at the Watertown Sons of Italy. The production is an original piece created and devised by the company during a four-week residency in Sicily, at San Placido Calonerò in the Messina region of Sicily. The cast of La Storia di Colapesce is comprised of an ensemble of eight American theatre artists. The Trinacria Theatre Company’s mission is to use theatre as a tool to promote Sicilian history, heritage, and culture at home and abroad. Company members reimagine the Sicilian folk legend of Colapesce, the tale of a fisherman’s son from Messina who spends so much of his time diving beneath the waves that he is said to be half-man, half-fish.
