OBIT: James Bean, 88, Helped Transform Arsenal, Worked for B&M Railroad

James Bean, age 88 of Watertown, passed away on March 23, 2016. Beloved husband of the late Helen (Pappas) Bean. Loving father of William Bean & his partner Gregory Wagoner, Elaine Bean and James Bean & his wife Maureen. Devoted grandfather of Jacqueline, Nicole, Brendan, Erin, Conor and Patrick, and great grandfather of Madilyn. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Mount Auburn Hospital Hosts Best Selling Authors to Benefit Breast Center

Mount Auburn Hospital presents Pink Pages, an evening featuring renowned author Alice Hoffman to benefit the hospital’s Hoffman Breast Center on Monday, May 16, 2016 beginning at 6 p.m. at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge. The event will feature readings and anecdotes from popular best-selling authors Jodi Picoult, Anita Diamant, Lisa Genova, Lily King, Ann Leary, and Elizabeth Strout.Emmy Award-winning arts and entertainment critic, advocate, motivational speaker, and cancer crusader Joyce Kulhawik will serve as the evening’s emcee. A bit about the evening’s participants:

Alice Hoffman has been called “America’s literary heir to the Brothers Grimm” and her luminous and remarkable “fables of the everyday” have enchanted readers since the publication of her first novel, Property Of, in 1977. Her novel, Dovekeepers, spent weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and was named one of the top books of 2011 by countless news and literary publications. It has been called “…a major contribution to twenty-first century literature” and in 2015 was adapted as a television miniseries. She has written 39 books including Practical Magic and Aquamarine, both of which were made into major motion pictures, as well as, Oprah Book Club selection Here on Earth.

Police Host Watertown Strong 5K; World Marathon Champ Will Attend

Sign up now for the third annual Watertown Strong 5K Run/Walk hosted by the Watertown Police, and meet the World Marathon Challenge Champion. The Watertown Police Supervisor’s Association will commemorate the anniversary of the events that led to the capture of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects by inviting the community to fill the streets of Watertown in a celebratory 5K road race. World Marathon Challenge champion Becca Pizzi, of Belmont, who ran seven marathons on seven continents in seven days and won them all, will be at the Watertown Strong Race. The event will be Sunday, April 17, 2016 beginning at Tufts Health Plan, 705 Mt. Auburn St.

Watertown Community Foundation Seeks Paid High School Summer Interns

Again this summer, the Watertown Community Foundation (WCF) is providing seven high school students who live in Watertown with the opportunity to have a paid summer internship with a local company or organization of their choice. This should help open doors for students to pursue opportunities with a variety of businesses, organizations, or agencies. It is a great way for high school kids to explore a career field of interest. Why?: Gain work experience, explore a potential career field, build your resume, network, make money, and have fun! What is the commitment?: A minimum of 20 hours per week for 6 weeks (more is OK).

Watertown High Welcomes Three Guest Speakers for SPEAK Week

The annual SPEAK Week is back at Watertown High School (WHS) March 28-April 1!! SPEAK (Sharing Personal Experiences and Knowledge) Week is organized by Wayside Multi Service-Center’s Watertown Youth Coalition (WYC) Peer Leaders from WHS, the WYC announced. Every year WYC Peer Leaders organize a fun filled week with special guest speakers, activities and knowledge building that relate to helping youth make positive healthy choices. This year SPEAK Week welcomes three guest speakers:

Get Real Teen Council, presenting on healthy relationships and consent, brought by the WHS Feminist Group. Dr. Bernard Lafayette, civil rights activist who worked with Dr. Martin Luther King, brought by World of Watertown, Watertown Public School Department, and the Watertown Police Department, discussing nonviolent conflict reconciliation.

Watertown Boys & Girls Club will be offering some new and exciting programs this spring! Join the “Intro to Theater” program for just $20. This 6-week program is a collaboration with the Arsenal Center for the Arts and Watertown Children’s Theatre and will be offered on Fridays from 4-5 p.m. starting on April 8.
