Mount Auburn Hospital Auxiliary’s 80th annual Thursday Morning Talks Series will begin this week. The 2016 lecture series will feature speakers who will cover a wide variety of topics including: art, journalism, national security, and challenges to our democracy. Speakers will include Eric Lander, President and Founding Director of the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT; Stephen Kurkjian, author and former investigative reporter for the Boston Globe; Ethan Lasser, Associate Curator of American Art at the Harvard Art Museums, and more. The Talk Series will be every Thursday, Jan. 7 to Feb.

Eliza Dushku Talks About Her Film ‘Dear Albania,’ Fighting the Addiction Epidemic

Eliza Dushku’s latest project is not a Hollywood blockbuster, but a documentary film. During the making of “Dear Albania” she found out more about the land of her ancestors and how it helped explained the passionate and compassionate sides of her personality. The film is five years in the making and debuted Monday night on WGBH’s World station. On Monday, she was at the Town Diner in Coolidge Square to talk to a few media outlets about her new project. She knew little about Albania and growing up in Watertown, she was often confused for being from one of the town’s other major immigrant groups. “In grade school teachers would ask, what’s your background, and we’d say Albanian,” Dushku recalled.

Arsenal Center Selling 100 Artworks for $100 at Flash Art Exhibition

The Arsenal Center for the Arts released the following announcement:
Flash Art, the Arsenal Center for the Arts’ biannual art lottery fundraiser is returning for its third year! We will be kicking off the New Year with this exhibition in January 2016. The show will run from Jan. 7-Feb. 26, 2016, with an opening reception and ticket sales event on Jan.

New Yorker Cartoonist Roz Chast Will Speak at Arsenal Center for the Arts

This spring, the New Repertory Theatre will host a Spotlight Symposium called “Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant? An Evening with Cartoonist Roz Chast. The New Yorker Cartoonist and author will be at the Arsenal Center for the Arts on Monday, April 11, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. in the Charles Mosesian Theater at the Arsenal Center for the Arts, 321 Arsenal St. Chast will be speaking about her memoir as it relates to the theme of New Rep’s National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere production of Steve Yockey’s Blackberry Winter, which premiers March 26-April 17, 2016. “New Rep is pleased to host celebrated cartoonist and humorist Roz Chast for this special Spotlight Symposium,” says Artistic Director, Jim Petosa.

Celebrate the First Day of 2016 at the Arsenal Center for the Arts

The Arsenal Center kicks off 2016 with an all ages day of fun!  Come to the Arsenal Center for the Arts from 1-3 pm on Friday, Jan. 1, 2016 and ring in the New Year with music and art at First Day ACA! Young, old, and everyone in between will enjoy the  catchy, pop-infused music of Karen K & the Jitterbugs, whose award-winning songs will have the audience dancing in their seats and asking for more. The whole family will laugh and gasp at the zany acrobatics of The Airborne Comedians, whose act includes 7 foot unicycles! And, as always at the Arsenal Center, we’ll have art projects like lantern making for kids, and more!

Library Announces the 2016 ‘One Book, One Watertown’ Title

Get ready to read this year’s selection for the annual townwide book event – One Book, One Watertown. 

The Watertown Free Public Library announced the selection for their 2016 “One Book, One Watertown” community read: The Race Underground by Doug Most. The Race Underground “weaves together the egos, political hurdles and other daunting challenges … in a sweeping narrative of late-19th-century intrigue” according to Sam Roberts of the The New York Times. One Book One Watertown programming will take place throughout March 2016, and will include a visit from the author, Doug Most, a program on modern transportation and urban planning with the MIT SENSEable City Lab, an art exhibition in the library’s gallery, a Boston/New York trivia night, films, book discussions, and more. Arsenal Center for the Arts Presents a Jazzy Christmas Concert

JAZZ at the Arsenal presents holiday themed concert of A Jazzy Christmas with The John Baboian Quintet on Monday, December 21 at 7:30 pm. Jazz at the Arsenal’s Artistic Director, John Baboian, brings his quartet into the Arsenal for a concert of music inspired by the Season. Guitarist/Composer, John Baboian, has been on the faculty at the Berklee College of Music in Boston for 35 years. He has been organizing the Jazz at the Arsenal series since its inception 8 years ago. This concert will feature unique compositions and arrangements of standard holiday fare.

Santa Claus Will be Visiting Watertown Savings Bank Branches
