Find Out About a Free Opera Performance in Watertown

Watertown residents are invited to a free opera performance at the Apartments at Coolidge School. 

The live free performance will be held Wednesday, Aug. 19 from 8-9 p.m. at the Coolidge School Auditorium, 319 Arlington St., Watertown

Join neighbors, friends and residents of the apartments at Coolidge School 319 Arlington Street Watertown for a one hour-long program of comic chamber opera which is being performed in and around the Greater Boston Area during the second half of August. Organizers won’t be charging admission or collecting donations since the performers are considering this an outreach event. The selected pieces with six performers from Opera Espresso accompanied by piano are:

Fan Favorites, Shakespeare Part of the Fun at the Faire on the Square

The schedule for the annual Faire on the Square was revealed this week, and entertainment will feature some familiar acts, as well as something for Shakespeare lovers. Watertown’s annual festival will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Saltonstall Park, behind Town Hall, Watertown Square. New Rep Theatre Holding Sale on Tickets for Upcoming Season

Theater lovers can get discounted tickets to the New Rep’s 2015-16 season for a limited time. From Aug. 1-3, the theater company based at the Arsenal Center for the Arts will be offering discounts of up to 30 percent off. The season includes Broken Glass, A Number, The Snow Queen, Blackberry Winter and Freud’s Last Session at the Charles Mosesian Theater, plus Via Dolorosa and The Testament of Mary at the Black Box Theater. Online-only ticket sales begin Saturday, Aug.

Summer Concert Features Mix of New Orleans Jazz, Swing and Folk Music

Made in the Shade performs this week at the Watertown Summer Concert Series. 

The band blends New Orleans jazz, swing, ethnic folk, and original music to delight listeners and dancers of all ages. The band is co-led by founding members Dan Fox (trombone) and Crick Diefendorf (banjo). Made in the Shade has played in some of the top New England events, including the Newport Jazz Festival, the Boston Globe Jazz Festival and the Boston Folk Festival. Find Out What’s Planned for the Next Watertown Family Movie Night

The first Watertown Family Movie night drew about 300 people, and the second one has even more fun planned! Hosted by the Watertown Police Department and the Recreation Department, the movie night will be held behind the Watertown Police Station, 552 Main St., on Friday, Aug. 7. The schedule includes games, sports, food and – of course – a movie. Here is the schedule:

The Love Dogs Return Watertown’s Summer Concert Series This Week

Come out Thursday to hear blues and R&B songs during the free Watertown Summer Concert. The Love Dogs will play at Saltonstall Park (next to Town Hall) from 6:30-8 p.m. The band combines elements of jump blues, New Orleans R&B and early rock ‘n’ roll. The band features a large horn section with alto, tenor, baritone saxes and trombone, along with boogie-woogie piano and Fender guitar. The band was voted the Best New England Band by Blues Audience magazine.  The Love Dogs’ lineup consists of Eddie “Duato” Scheer, Alizon Lissance (keyboards, vocals), Myanna (alto/tenor sax, vocals), Glenn Shamboom (guitar, baritone sax), Randy Bramwell (bass, vocals), Steve Brown (drums, vocals), along with part time members Mario Perrett (tenor sax/vocals), Mark Paquin (tenor sax, trombone) and old friend “Sax” Gordon Beadle (tenor and baritone sax). Bring your lawn chairs, blanket and a picnic and dine al fresco with family, friends and neighbors.

Watertown-Based Music Group Welcomes New Executive Director

Revels, Inc., the Watertown-based national non-profit performing arts company best known for its annual holiday production The Christmas Revels, is pleased to announce the appointment of Howard W. Grant as its new executive director. Grant replaces Steven Smith who led the organization for more than four years before accepting a job on the West Coast, and interim Executive Director Diane Kennedy who graciously filled Smith’s role since February. Grant began his position on July 6. A graduate of Boston University School of Music, Grant has over 20 years’ experience in performing arts management serving in top management positions at the Honolulu Symphony, Long Island Philharmonic, and the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition, he has worked as a marketing and management consultant for small businesses and cultural organizations including West Hawaii Arts Guild, Honolulu Academy of Arts, and Discovery Ensemble, a Boston-based chamber orchestra.

This week Watertown is packed full of fun and interesting events, and most of them are free! Thursday evening you can enjoy the latest Watertown Summer Concert. This week’s featured performer is Southern Rail. The band has been playing Bluegrass music for more than 30 years. The free concert begins at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 16 at Saltonstall Park (next to Town Hall).
