See the Trailer for Eliza Dushku’s Latest Film Which Raises Awareness of Autism

In her latest film, Eliza Dushku plays the sister of an autistic woman looking for love. “Jane Wants a Boyfriend” has already been shown at a couple film festivals last month. The movie debuted at the Greenwich International Film Festival in Connecticut and also was a selection at the Lower East Side Film Festival in New York City. Both took place in June. Inspired by a true story, the film stars Louisa Krause as Jane and Watertown’s own Dushku as her sister Bianca. It is directed by William C. Sullivan and was written by Jarret Kerr. The description on the film’s website says: “Despite dealing with the everyday challenges of being on the autism spectrum, Jane looks to her older sister Bianca, to help her find her very first boyfriend.

Bluegrass Band Southern Rail Performing in Watertown’s Summer Concert

The sounds of Bluegrass will be in the air during this week’s Watertown Summer Concert. 

Southern Rail has been playing for m ore than three decades and has 12 recordings to its credit. “Southern Rail’s performances are high-energy exuberant fun, with riveting harmonies, irrepressible humor and sparkling banjo, mandolin, and guitar solo work,” according to the Southern Rail website. The band features Jim Muller on guitar and lead vocals, Sharon Horovitch on acoustic bass and harmony vocals, Richard Stillman plays banjo and provides harmony vocals and John Tibert plays the mandolin and sings harmony vocals. Arsenal on the Charles Summer Concert Series Starts This Week!

Head down to the Arsenal on the Charles to hear some music and grab a bite to eat during the Summer Concert Series. 

The Arsenal Center for the Arts announced this year’s lineup for Live at Lunch at the Arsenal on the Charles in Watertown. The performances take place each Wednesday at noon – with a Thursday rain date – on the lawn adjacent to 400 Wooley Ave. Some of New England’s best talent takes the stage for free hour-long outdoor performances!  Scheduled concerts include:

Summer Concert Series Returns with a Mix of Music from the ’40s to the ’80s

The Watertown Summer Concert Series returns after a week off and features Eight to the Bar, which performs songs from the Forties all the way to the Eighties. 

The group from Connecticut celebrates 40 years in 2015, and the concert at Watertown’s Saltonstall Park will include a CD release party. The New Haven Advocate described Eight to the Bar’s music as being like “Listening to Eight to the Bar is a lot like driving along a time-warped highway precisely halfway between Count Basie’s Kansas City and Motown Records’ Detroit, where the car radio picks up everything from Take the A Train to I Want You Back.” They feature a colorful mix of Forties jive, Fifties melodrama, and through Eighties Motown. The band is also known for their outfits and choreography. Eight to the Bar’s saxaponist Collin Tilton played on Van Morrison’s platinum-selling Moondance album and also has performed with the Rolling Stones and Clarence Clemmons.

The Watertown Free Public Library has plenty going on in July, with author talks, kids gardening, a nature walk and more.

Stephen Kurkjian to Speak About Art Heist
Tuesday, July 14 at 7 p.m.

Three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, Stephen Kurkjian will speak about his book, Master Thieves, regarding the unsolved art robbery at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. Kurkjian “recounts all the major theories, talks to some of the would-be masterminds, and seems to have a pretty good idea who might be responsible…” – The Boston Globe

Saturday, July 18 from 10-11:30 a.m.
Rain date: July 25. Inspired by summer reading pick, H is for Hawk, we’re inviting you to enjoy a guided river walk with naturalist photographer Carole Berney. Walk is limited to 15 people, age 16 and up. Meet by the front entrance of the library.

Head to the Mall for a Drive-In Movie This Summer

Get the family in the car and head over to the Arsenal Project in Watertown for a pair of free drive-in movies this summer. 

The mall will screen “Happy Feet” on Tuesday, July 21 and “Grease” on Tuesday Aug. 18. Rain dates will be the following Tuesday. Look for the big screen in The Arsenal Project front parking lot. Free activities and fun for kids start at 6:30 p.m., and popcorn, treats and more will be available.

The Watertown Recreation Department will host a free Independence Day celebration at Victory Field. The Fourth of July Celebration will be held on Friday, July 3 at Victory Field on Orchard Street.
