The Watertown Summer Concert Series begins this week and continues through mid-August. The free concerts are held on Thursdays at Saltonstall Park, next to Town Hall in Watertown Square. Lawn chairs and picnics are welcome outdoors. 2015 Watertown Summer Concert Series

Police Teaming With Rec Department for Movie Nights, Street Hockey

The Watertown Police Department will work with the Recreation Department to put on some fun activities for youngsters and families this summer. 

Two free family movie nights will be held behind the Watertown Police Station. Aimed at elementary school students and their families, the events will be held on Friday, July 17 and Sunday, Aug. 9 from 6:30-10 p.m.

The evening begins with games, face painting, pizza, popcorn and refreshments. The movie begins at 8 p.m.

Parking is available in front of the Police Station. Cops & Rec Street Hockey
On Sundays beginning in July, the police and Recreation Department will host street hockey for girls and boys in grades 2 to 12.

Watertown Greek Church Hosting Festival Full of Music, Food and Fun

Watertown’s Taxiarchae-Archangels Greek Orthodox Church is hosting its annual Grecian Festival on June 26, 27, and 28. Festival hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, June 26, and Saturday, June 27, and Noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, according to the festival announcement. The Festival features homemade Greek cuisine (including its famous gyros), pastries, Greek frappé coffee, Greek music and dancing, Greek imports and souvenirs, a bookstore, children’s games, Church tours, and a raffle. Music will be provided by Orfeas Band (Friday and Saturday, 7-11 p.m.) and Greek Music and Video (Sunday, Noon-8 p.m.). The Festival will be held in the Church’s Hellenic Cultural Center and under the tent in its parking lot, both located at 25 Bigelow Ave.

Watertown Man Featured in Reagle Theatre’s Guys and Dolls

Watertown’s Brad Peloquin will play one of the featured roles in the upcoming production of Guys and Dolls. 

Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston will open its 47th consecutive summer season with the Broadway favorite, Guys and Dolls, from June 11-21, 2015 at the Robinson Theatre (617 Lexington St. Waltham, MA, 02452). Set in Damon Runyon’s jubilant, shimmering New York City, this Tony Award-winning musical about gangsters, showgirls, and mission workers will feature Brad Peloquin in the comedic role of “Nicely-Nicely Johnson”, a small time gambler who is one of Nathan Detroit’s closest associates. The role of Nathan Detroit will be played by Newsman/Actor Scott Wahle. Individual tickets range from $35 to $63; season subscriptions and group tickets are available at a discount.

Mass Audubon Coming to Watertown to Present Program for Kids

The Mass Audubon Society will be in town to put on a specials interactive program for children ages 3-6. The Arsenal Project will host “Bugs and Flowers” on Wednesday, June 3. Drop in between 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to find out about wildlife around you. “Right outside your door the world is popping and hopping. Plants are flowers, bees are buzzing, and other insects are everywhere.

Watertown Man Hosts Cartoon Fans Young and Old at Recent Workshop

Cartoonist and cable TV host Fred Grandinetti recently put on a workshop to show people how to draw some of his favorite characters. Grandinetti has hosted a program on Watertown Cable Access program where he can show some of his favorite cartoons, including Popeye, and has added public service announcements on subjects such as health, fitness and water safety (read more here). Recently two “Drawing With Fred” workshops were held at The Arsenal Project as part of The Watertown Art Association 2015 Annual Exhibit. People of all ages learned how to draw Popeye, Wimpy, Olive Oyl, Bluto and one of Popeye’s nephews, said Grandinetti. Drawing With Fred can be seen on The Watertown Community Access Channel and is produced by Grandinetti.

Armenian Writer, Artist to Speak at Opening of New Exhibition

Writer and artist C.K. Garabed will visit Watertown and speak about the exhibition of his artworks at the Armenian Museum of America. C.K. Garabed (Charles G. Kasbarian) is best known to Armenians for his writings and editorial projects, but he is also a versatile visual artist. On Sun., May 24, the Armenian Museum of America (AMA) will host an exhibition of his abstract watercolor paintings—the first exhibition of its kind in New England, according to the event announcement. These striking pieces recall imaginings from his Armenian subconscious and were crafted to permit viewers to walk away with their own interpretations. The year 2015 marks the 25th year that C.K. Garabed has been writing his column, “Uncle Garabed’s Notebook,” a popular mainstay of the Armenian Weekly — a newspaper based in Watertown.
