Watertown Field Hockey’s Record Streak a Family Affair

Watertown’s field hockey players hugged and danced on the field after setting a new national record for the most straight unbeaten games by a high school team Wednesday afternoon, but they were also quick to acknowledge the players that game before them. After beating Melrose 6-0 and extending their unbeaten streak to 154 games, the Raiders invited all the former players in the stands to come down to pose with them for the throngs of media at Victory Field. They came in droves, some with children in hand. Coach Eileen Donahue was glad to see her former players in attendance. “Once you are a Watertown player, you are always a Watertown player,” Donahue said.

Watertown Field Hockey Streaks to National Unbeaten Record!

The big crowd at Victory Field began the standing ovation for the Watertown filed hockey team with two minutes left, and when the clock hit zero players and fans alike erupted. The Raider now hold the national record unbeaten streak of 154 straight games. The game against Melrose was over early, as Watertown scored three times in the first 10 minutes of the game, including two blasts from the top of the circle by junior Kourtney Kennedy and a tip in by senior Ally McCall. Grace Duguay scored 12 minutes and 15 minutes into the first half and McCall got her second with two minutes left in the half. The second half, the Raiders took off the pressure, and eased to a 6-0 win.

1983 League Champ Football Team to Enter Watertown Hall of Fame

One of the great Watertown High School football teams will be honored at the Watertown High School Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony on Oct. 17. The WHS HOF committee wrote up the following profile of the 1983 football team:

In a pre-season poll late in the summer of 1983, 9 of the 10 Middlesex League football coaches chose Watertown as the team to beat. Care to guess which coach voted for another squad? Upon its entrance into the powerful league in 1970, only Woburn had posted more wins on the gridiron than the Red Raiders, so it wasn’t unusual for John Barbati’s talented unit to garner so much acclamation. In fact, the Hall of Fame Coach called this lineup “one of the most unselfish I have ever coached.

Former Basketball Great Casey Brackett to Enter WHS Athletic Hall of Fame

Former Watertown basketball player Casey Brackett will be one of the inductees to the Watertown High School Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 17. The WHS HOF committee submitted the following profile of Brackett. By the time Casey Brackett walked the graduation line at Victory Field in 2003, the point guard extraordinaire was a two time Herald All-Scholastic, a Globe All-Scholastic, a Middlesex League MVP, a two-time League all-star, and had added his name to the WHS record book by becoming the school’s all-time leader in assists and steals. The tireless worker and deft defender also possessed a killer shooting range and was fearless driving the lane, scoring over 900 points in his decorated career.

WHS Sports: Field Hockey Beats Belmont, Boys’ Soccer Scores Big Upset

Archrival Belmont put up a struggle for the Watertown High School field hockey team, but they could not stop the Raiders from recording their 150th straight unbeaten game.

The game Thursday was played in Belmont and the Marauders kept Watertown off the board for 23 minutes until senior Michaela Antonellis scored off a pass from Maddie Leitner, according to the report from The Belmontonian. Senior Ally McCall made it 2-0 on a counter attack with 26 minutes left in the second. Then, Leitner got a goal of her own off a corner with 21 minutes left. Antonellis scored her second with 12 minutes left in the game and secured Watertown’s 12th win of the season. Belmont forced Raider goalie Jonna Kennedy to stop two shots.
