Watertown Youth Softball Celebrates Win Over Neighbor

The 12U Watertown Summer Panthers celebrated a recent victory over Waltham. Chloe Fandetti and Gracie Denneen combined to pitch six innings while Bella Johnson stopped just about everything thrown her way as the catcher. The Panthers had some hot bats at the plate too, said coach Del Furbish. Alyssa Carroll and Chloe had 2 doubles each scoring all the runners on board. The play of the game happened when Waltham had bases loaded with one out in the third inning, Furbish said. Pitcher Chloe collected a line drive out and doubled up by throwing to Gracie at first for the inning ending double play.

Boston 2024 Organizers Say Area Will Get Jobs, Transportation Improvements

If Boston gets the Summer Olympics in 2024, the events will not be held in Watertown, but organizers said the event could be a boon for area jobs, transportation, housing and recreation areas. 

The organizers of the Boston Olympic bid came to Boston College Wednesday to make their case for hosting both the Summer Olympics and the Paralympics in 2024. Among the panel of speakers was Molly Schaus, who represented the United States as goalie of the women’s ice hockey team at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics. She dreamed of being in the Olympics since 1998 when she saw the women’s hockey team win gold, and Schaus said the experience exceeded the her dreams, that started when she was in elementary school. Schaus and she would love to have Boston be one of the special places that hosts an Olympics. Part of every Olympics is the thousands of volunteers who welcome athletes to the area and help them get around.

Watertown Youth Softball Starts Summer Season With a Win

Watertown Youth Softball plays year ’round, and the girls of summer started the latest season with a win. In first game of the summer, Watertown won a barn burner 15-14 over Waltham with the help of a grand slam hit by Haley Bass. The girls play their home games at the Lowell Field. They have a combined 28 games to play vs towns such as: Wakefield, Lynnfield, Stoneham, Newton, Charlestown, Lincoln-Sudbury, Medford, Woburn, Reading, Cambridge, Waltham, Lexington, Winchester, Billerica, and Acton-Boxboro. Boston 2024 Olympic Bid Organizers Holding Meeting Locally

The group hoping to bring the Summer Olympics to Boston will host a meeting near Watertown. Community members and residents of Watertown, Belmont, Waltham, Newton, Allston, Brighton, Brookline and Needham are invited to participate in a conversation about the Boston 2024 bid on Wednesday, July 1, at 6:30 p.m. at Boston College’s Robsham Theater. The meeting is hosted by Boston College, City of Newton, Town of Needham, Town of Watertown, Newton-Needham Chamber and Watertown-Belmont Chamber of Commerce. “The Watertown-Belmont Chamber of Commerce is excited to co-host the Boston 2024 Community Meeting,” said Megan O’Halloran, Executive Director of the Watertown-Belmont Chamber of Commerce. “It will allow residents and local businesses in several communities to gain a better understanding of the full scope of the 2024 Olympics if Boston is awarded the summer games.”

The meeting is one of Boston 2024’s statewide community meeting series.

Watertown U12 Girls’ Soccer Team Grabs Tournament Victory

The Watertown Power Girls U12 soccer team had a successful Father’s Day weekend, winning a tournament title. The team went 4-0 and won the Portsmouth Invitational Youth Soccer tournament in Rhode Island. The Power won a thrilling 2-0 victory over the host Portsmouth to claim the championship. Team members include:

Karen Young, Isabella Tancredo, Hannah Moylan, Guilia Salvucci, Kaelene Young, Carly MacCormack, Katie Shea, Laney Andrade, Chris Shea, Teagan Young, Alli Fitzpatrick, Leah Bailey, Sofia Dushku and Audrey Garland.

See How Watertown’s Relay Team Ran at the National Track Meet

A foursome of Watertown High School track athletes traveled to North Carolina to compete against the best prep track athletes in the nation. The girls’ 4 x 800 meter relay team of senior Tina Touri, freshmen Elizabeth Powderly and Emily Koufos and junior Katherine Tolman ran in the New Balance Outdoor Nationals at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C. on Friday. The team ran a time of 9:52.44, and finished 38th in the Emerging Elite competition, according to FlashResults.com. The tope team, Saline, Mich., ran a time of 9:19.06

The team qualified enjoyed some success this year. The foursome qualified for Nationals by running a 9:39.48 at the MTSCA Girls Coaches Invitational, and set a new Watertown High School record.

Watertown Athletes Honored, League Champ Recognized

Playing a high school sport requires a lot of effort, dedication and time, so playing three sports a year for four years is a feat that deserves being honored, which is what Watertown High School Athletic Director Michael Lahiff did this week. A dozen Raiders received the Athletic Director’s Award for participating in sports every season for their whole career at Monday’s School Committee meeting. Lahiff created the award to encourage more participation in a small high school. This year’s award winners are:

Anthony Busconi – golf, hockey and lacrosse

Angel Carrion – football, basketball and lacrosse

Brian DallaCosta – football, basketball and indoor and outdoor track

Molly Day – soccer, indoor and outdoor track

Watertown’s latest Middlesex League champions also received their due from the School Committee. The girls’ lacrosse team won its third straight title this year, and made it to the State Tournament where it won its first ever tournament game.
