Last Chance for Nominations for WHS Athletics Hall of Fame

The Watertown High School Athletic Hall of Fame announces the deadline for nominating members for this year’s class is Thursday April 30. Founded in 1992, the Hall honors individuals and teams who have made significant contributions to the community through their time as student-athletes or in support of various athletic programs at Watertown High School. This year’s inductees will be honored at the banquet in the fall. Recent inductees include former Raider greats Bob Murgo, Renee Gaudette, George Salvitti, and current boys’ basketball coach Steve Harrington. Watertown Moving Company Sponsoring Special Olympics Athlete

Special Olympics Massachusetts athlete Amanda Church is one of only seven athletes representing Massachusetts and the United States at the Special Olympics World Games this year. Olympia Moving & Storage will be sponsoring Amanda and her trip to the 2015 World Games. World Games will be the largest sporting event in 2015, featuring over 7,000 athletes from 177 countries. The Games begin July 25th in Los Angeles, according to the announcement sent out by Olympia. Amanda has been competing with Special Olympics since 1998. She has won numerous gold medals and was inducted into the Special Olympics Massachusetts Hall of Fame in 2012.

Watertown HS Championship Teams Celebrated at School Committee

Watertown High School’s athletic teams completed a historic winter, with a state championship, two sectional titles and four league championships. Last week, the Watertown School Committee congratulated the victorious team, two of which went farther than any previous team in WHS history. Boys Hockey
The boys hockey team showed off its state championship trophy, which it won after a tourney run that took them on some trips to Chelmsford, to the Cape and finally the TD Garden for the final, where they beat Agawam for the school’s first hockey championship. The tournament run started with a tough game against Dracut, and Athletic Director Michael Lahiff said the game got so rough that he called the tournament organizers to complain. The Raiders, however, stayed out of trouble.

Sign Up for Baseball League for Children with Special Needs

An information and sign up session for the the Watertown Challenger Division, a division of Little League baseball especially designed for boys and girls ages 8 -18 with special needs, will be held on April 8. Join us in our third year of providing this wonderful opportunity for everyone to be part of a team and community! The ‘Challenger Division’ program is dedicated to providing children of varying experiences and abilities to have fun learning to play baseball while also providing a chance to be part of a team in their community! Along with their baseball skills, all children will work on social pragmatics, team collaboration and much more! Training and support will be provided to children at their level of need.

America’s Best Climbers Coming to Watertown for National Championships

The 2015 SCS Open National Championships will take place at Central Rock Gym Watertown March 27-28. This competition features the best adult climbers in the United States competing in disciplines of Lead and Speed climbing for a spot on the U.S. Climbing Team and a share of the $20,000 prize purse. This is the largest and most prestigious climbing competition in the U.S., featuring the nation’s 100+ top climbers and drawing over 1,000 spectators to the two day event, according to an announcement for the event. Central Rock Gym Watertown, with over 28,000 sq. ft.

Raiders Notebook: Watertown Celebrates First Boys’ Hockey State Title

Watertown hockey coach Mike Hayes worked with what he was given, and took the Raiders to the state title on Sunday. He hopes to stay in the hunt next year even after losing some key seniors. The Raiders skated to the MIAA Div. 3 state title at the TD Garden Sunday with a 2-1 victory over Agawam. The team did it with a roster of 19, and Hayes said five of those players did not hit the ice.

STATE CHAMPS: Watertown Beats Agawam at the Garden for the Boys’ Hockey Title

 

Two old reliables – Anthony Busconi and Tyler Gardiner – came through for Watertown Sunday afternoon at the TD Garden, and the Raiders skated home with the MIAA Div. 3 State Championship after beating Agawam 2-1. Senior goalie, Busconi, kept Watertown in the game against the physical and talented Brownies. He made 13 saves while the Raiders could only muster four shots. Things changed in the second period.
