Tickets Available for the Watertown High School Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet

Tickets can be purchased now for the Watertown High School Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet. The event will be held at the Hellenic Cultural Center on Saturday, Oct. 17. For the 1st time in its distinguished history, the HOF will induct 4 talented sisters from the same family – Bethany Rogers ’95, Jane Rogers ’98, Catherine Rogers ’00, and Mary Rogers ’03. The other two athletes to be inducted include dynamic point guard Casey Brackett, and track star Nick Goodman, both members of the class of ’03.

HBC Wins Watertown Summer Basketball League Title

The Watertown Summer Basketball League ended with a dominating victory by champions HBC in the second game of the best-of-three finals series. The Watertown Recreation Department provided the game summaries of the finals. HBC beat Donohue’s Kaos in the semifinals and Zards – the other finalists – took out the defending champions, Made Men. Game 1 – Wednesday, Aug. 12
In one of the most competitive games in Watertown Recreation Summer Hoop finals history, HBC edged Zards by the score of 69-66.

Summer Basketball League Playoffs Heating Up, Continue Monday

Play in the Watertown Summer Basketball League playoffs has been close, with both semifinal series in the Papas Elite League even and going to a decisive third game on Monday. The Watertown Recreation Department provided the following roundup of the semifinal action so far. The league, which features many current and former college players, has gotten some attention beyond Watertown, with a story in the Boston Globe (click here to see the story). Donahue’s Kaos Steal Game One
Louis Dale lead Donohue’s Kaos to a 62-58 victory over the number one seed by scoring a game high 24 points. With many offensive and defensive rebounds by Jesse Vega, Donohue’s Kaos was able to obtain the lead for most of the game.

Five Watertown Softball Players Named to All-Star Team

Watertown Youth Softball had five players competing in this year’s Middle Essex Softball All-Star Game. Iris Egan, Vicky Reilly, Katie Haley, Chloe Fandetti and Gracie Denneen played in the games, which took place last weekend in Billerica. The girls were able to compete at a very high level with some of the state’s best. They competed like true champs and represented Watertown proudly, said Watertown Youth Softball Coach Del Furbish. The Watertown girls were selected for not only their great play but also for their love and joy and everyday enthusiasm they bring to the game, Furbish said.

Watertown Soccer Player Makes NE Revolution Development Academy

Watertown’s Samuel Deossa was chosen from players from around New England to be part of the the New England Revolution’s Under 14 Academy squad, the Major League Soccer team announced this week. Deossa, a midfielder/forward, will play with the Revolution Academy against other development teams from across the country in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy league. They also receive invitations to play in international tournaments. The academy is part of the program to develop players to play professional soccer. The Revolution Academy sent out the following release:

Watertown Summer Basketball League Playoffs Underway

The Papas Elite Summer League regular season wrapped up last week, and the first round of the playoffs were held Tuesday night. The league features current and former college basketball players, and games are played in Saltonstall Park at the court behind the Watertown Boys & Girls Club. The O’Brien-Jeharian Legends League playoffs also start this week. The fifth-seeded Donohue’s Kaos beat fourth seed Gauchos 50-46 in the first quarterfinal. The second seed, Made Men, had a tough game with No. 7 Middlesex Magic.

New Youth Lacrosse Program Running at Casey Park Outdoor Rink

Watertown Youth Lacrosse has started a new program for beginning players to learn to play and have some fun. The Coaches and Board of Directors of Watertown Boys Youth Lacrosse to announced the start of an informal, fun and free Box Lacrosse program at the Casey Park Outdoor Rink. The program runs on Tuesday nights and is for Watertown boys in grades 2 and up. “If your son is looking to try the ‘fastest game on 2 feet,’ Box lacrosse is fun way for boys to get introduced to the great game of Lacrosse in a low competitive environment,” said Jay Hughes of Watertown Youth Lacrosse. “For those who currently play, it is a great way to hone those sticks skills and have a blast with your friends!”

Watertown Youth Softball Celebrates Win Over Neighbor

The 12U Watertown Summer Panthers celebrated a recent victory over Waltham. Chloe Fandetti and Gracie Denneen combined to pitch six innings while Bella Johnson stopped just about everything thrown her way as the catcher. The Panthers had some hot bats at the plate too, said coach Del Furbish. Alyssa Carroll and Chloe had 2 doubles each scoring all the runners on board. The play of the game happened when Waltham had bases loaded with one out in the third inning, Furbish said. Pitcher Chloe collected a line drive out and doubled up by throwing to Gracie at first for the inning ending double play.
