Two Watertown Players Named to All-Scholastic Field Hockey Teams

Watertown High School seniors Gabby Venezia, left, and Olivia Lampasona made the All-Scholastic Teams named by the Boston Globe and Boston Herald. A pair of Watertown High School field hockey players made the All-Scholastic teams as named by the Boston Globe and Boston Herald. Seniors Gabby Venezia and Olivia Lampasona made the prestigious team named by Boston’s two major papers. 

Venezia scored 22 goals for the Raiders and added 10 assists. The midfielder was named the Middlesex League’s Most Valuable Player and made the Middlesex League All-Stars for the second straight year. She will be playing in college next year at Holy Cross.

WHS Sports: Successful Start for Raiders’ Winter Squads

The winter season just started, and Watertown High School’s athletic teams have already rack up some wins. 

Girls Basketball

Perhaps no team had a better start than the girls basketball team. Coach Pat Ferdinand’s team already has more wins than last season, after defeating Winchester 42-22 on Tuesday, led by junior captain Brianna Williams’ 12 points. “Wasn’t sure what to expect tonight, but knew we’d compete,” Ferdinand said after the opener at Winchester. The next night, the Raiders traveled to East Boston, and defeated the Jets 46-27. Freshman Taylor Lambo posted a double-double, with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

WHS Girls Basketball Team Works with Youth Players, Comes into Season with New Attitude

Members of the Watertown High School girls basketball team spent their Sunday morning at a special team building event, one in which they look to improve this year’s squad and hopefully pay off in future years. 

WHS Head Coach Pat Ferdinand dubbed the event Media Day, but for the team, the focus of the clinic was working with youth basketball players who came to the event at the WHS Gym. The morning was filled with much more than shooting, dribbling and passing. The youth players, most of whom are currently at Watertown Middle School, worked with high school players on the drills and plays run by the Raiders, said junior Annabella Beck. “We get the girls here and give them a feel of what we do here,” Beck said. “It is just so great to have the chance to work with them.”

Hundreds Run the 13th Annual Donohue’s Turkey Trot Despite Arctic Conditions

Fifteen minutes before the 2018 Donohue’s Turkey Trot was scheduled to begin, Bigelow Avenue was nearly deserted. As race time approached, however, hundreds of runners emerged from Donohue’s Bar & Grill for the Thanksgiving morning 5K on the streets of Watertown. Despite temperatures in the low teens, 567 runners ran the 20th edition of the race. Many ran in duffle coats, others in head to toe furry costumes, and many had turkey headwear. One brave runner came out in shorts.

Watertown Football Falls to Belmont in a Frigid Thanksgiving Day Game

BELMONT  — Watertown High School’s football team looked like they would have a good chance of extending its six game winning streak over rival Belmont after scoring three early touchdowns, but the Marauders turned it around at a subfreezing Harris Field to win the Thanksgiving Day game 33-20. Despite kicking off to start the game, the Raiders found themselves with the ball for the first three possessions of the game. They turned the botched Belmont kickoff returns into three touchdowns and took a 20-0 lead just 2:13 into the game. Watertown senior Mange Camara seemed to do it all, including four straight kickoffs that were recovered by the Raiders (one was called back because the referees said the whistle had not blown to start the play). As well as punting for the Raiders.

Two Watertown Field Hockey Players Sign Letters to Play in College

Two members of the Watertown High School field hockey team will continue playing the sport when the move on to college next year. 

Monday afternoon, Gabby Venezia and Catherine Connors signed letters of intent to play in college. Venezia will be playing at Holy Cross, while Connors will join the team at Stonehill College. Watertown Head Coach Eileen Donahue thanked Venezia and Connors for their leadership this season, along with fellow co-captain Olivia Lampasona, Venezia and Connors were good examples to their teammates, Donahue added. “Both played any position they were asked to play, they always put the team’s needs ahead of individual needs,” Donahue said. “They only knew one way to play, it was to play all out.”

Watertown Field Hockey’s 9-Year Tourney Win Streak Ends With Loss in State Semifinal

BRAINTREE — Something happened Tuesday night for the first time since George W. Bush was in the White House — the Watertown High School field hockey team lost in the State Tournament. 

The Raiders’ nine-plus year, 49 game State Tournament winning streak ended with a 2-1 loss to Dennis-Yarmouth in the MIAA Div. 2 State Semifinal. After one-goal wins in the past two rounds, Watertown again found itself in a dogfight. The Dolphins strategy of packing in on defense and playing for a counterattack frustrated the Raiders in the first half. One of Dennis-Yarmouth’s forays into Watertown territory resulted in two straight corners.
