Raiders Claim Four Wins at Div. 4 Outdoor Track Championships

IPSWICH — Watertown High School’s boys and girls track and field teams claimed four individual titles, and the boys finished third overall at Saturday’s Eastern Div. 4 Outdoor Track Championships on Saturday. Sprinter Mange Camara continued his dominant season by winning the spring events at the meet at a sweltering Ipswich High School track. Distance runner Emily Koufos won a title of her own, and Ben Landry got two second places during the championships. They boys also finished in the top three for two relays.

Field ‘Resting,’ Installation of Lights May Impact Users of Filippello Park Fields

The Watertown Recreation Department will host a meeting to discuss the impact of the temporary closing of part of one field at Filipello Park and the installation of lights on May 24, at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall. 

The fields are used by Watertown Youth Soccer, Watertown Men’s Softball and other users. The Recreation Department sent out the following announcement:
As you may be aware, the Department of Recreation sent out a proactive email on Monday, May 7 identifying the concern that the late school start time for high school and middle school students will impact field schedules by at least 30 minutes, and to announce that because of renovation project of the Filippello (Grove) entrance, and the requested resting of the field, Filippello (Grove) most likely will be closed in fall 2018. 
The Town is also in the process of finalizing plans for new LED field lights for both Filippello (Grove) and Filippello (Arlington) for the possible installation in fall of 2018. The later start time for schools and the construction activities at Filippello Park will have obvious impacts to a number of programs, and we want to engage in a conversation to exchange information regarding this situation and to discuss all options to resolve these impacts. As a result, the Town will hold a meeting with various Town representatives, and community members on May 24, at 6:30 p.m. in the Town Council Chamber to have a conversation about these challenges. Please feel free to reach out to the Recreation Department in advance to identify any specific issues and questions that you might have.

Several Hundred Join the 2018 Watertown Finish Strong 5K Run and Walk

Nearly 600 runners came out on a rainy Sunday morning to celebrate the Watertown Strong spirit inspired by the aftermath of the Boston Marathon Bombings and the capture of the bombing suspects in Watertown five years ago. The fourth annual Watertown Police Finish Strong 5K Run and Walk started and ended at Tufts Health Plan. Despite the poor conditions hundreds participated. Among those at the race this were Boston Marathon Bombing survivor Jeff Bauman and one of the people who helped injured people after the bombing, Carlos Arredondo. The race is run by the Watertown Police Relief Association, Watertown Supervisors Association and Watertown Patrol Officers Association.

Watertown High School sophomore Tim McCall recently returned from Frisco, Colo., where he competed in the 2018 USASA Snowboard National Championships. While there he showed he was among the best in his age group. Watertown News asked McCall about his experience, and how he fits snowboarding into his life as a high school student, and multi-sport athlete. 1) Earlier this month you competed in the USASA Snowboarding Nationals in Colorado. How did you do and what was the experience like?

Watertown High School Grad Taking His Game to the Next Level at Bentley

Former Watertown High School baseball player Austin Farry has continued his career on the diamond at nearby Bentley University. 

While at Watertown High School he also played football and hockey, and served as captain for all three sports his senior year. He was a member of the 2015 State Championship winning hockey team and played in the Shriner’s Football Game and Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Association all-star game. After not getting much time on the field in his freshman year, Farry — an outfielder for the Falcons — has seen a lot of playing time in his junior year and has a career batting average of over .260. This season, through 24 games, Farry has a .256 batting average, 22 hits (including two doubles), 15 runs, and eight RBIs. Watertown News caught up with Farry to see how life is at Bentley.

Battling rainy, gusty and cold conditions, along with the normal challenges of the Boston Marathon, these Watertown runners completed the race on Monday. 

Watertown’s fastest runner was Craig Hammond, who finished in 2:44:20. The 23-year-old’s time was the 246th fastest for men and 269th overall. The fastest female runner from Watertown was Erin Jaffke, 25, who finished in 3:10:58. She was the 305th fastest woman. Thirty-three Watertown runners completed the 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boston.

The 2018 Boston Marathon will once again draw thousands of spectators to the 26.2 mile course from Hopkinton to Copley Square, and the race may impact how you get around on Monday. See info about the T, spectator rules, street closings and more. To accommodate the race, the T will make some changes to its normal service, including altering some routes, closing some subway stations. In some cases the T has added more service to move the crowds around the area. CHANGES TO MBTA SERVICES

See the 39 Watertown Residents Running the 2018 Boston Marathon

Watertown will be well represented in the 122nd Boston Marathon on Monday with 39 registered participants. The number of Watertown runners rose slightly from last year when 36 resident took part. The highpoint for local runners came in 2014, the year after the Boston Marathon Bombings, when Watertown had 72 entrants. The race will be broadcast on WBZ Channel 4 beginning at 7 a.m. and running until 7 p.m. A re-broadcast of the race will be shown on myTV Channel 38 beginning at 8 p.m. on Monday.
