Arlington-Watertown Girls Swimmers Split Dual Meets Against Reading, Burlington

The Arlington-Watertown girls swimming team split a pair of dual meets over the past couple weeks. On Sept. 23, the coop team lost to reading 58-35, but the team had two swimmers and a relay qualify for the State Meet, according to Head Coach Adlar Su. Sarah Peterson qualified in the 50 free, Isabelle Houseman qualified in the 200 individual medley, and the 200 free relay qualified. Watertown swimmer Niamh Murphy third place in the 200 free and was part of the winning 400 free relay.

Watertown Football Team Runs into Tough Wilmington Team

The Watertown High School football team’s struggles continued on its trip to Wilmington Friday night, where the Raiders fell 33-7. After winning the season opener, the Raiders have dropped the next three leading up to their Middlesex League game at Wilmington. On Friday, Wilmington built a 14 point second quarter lead before the Raiders struck back. Watertown’s David Manoukian then returned the kickoff 72-yards for a touchdown. Wilmington kept the Raiders out of the end zone in the second half, while Peter Marino scored his second and third touchdowns of the evening.

Watertown Field Hockey Team Avenges Only Loss of Last Season

The Watertown High School field hockey team exacted a bit of revenge, Monday, on the team that ended its national record unbeaten streak. The Raiders defeated Winchester 2-0 at Victory Field. 

Watertown improved its record to 4-0 with the win over the team that not only handed it its last loss but also its last tie. The Raiders controlled the play most of the first half, but struggled to get quality shots on net. That changed quickly in the second half. Just two minutes into the second, senior Catherine Connors scored off a corner.

Watertown Football Faced Tough Melrose Team in Middlesex League Opener

Watertown ran into a tough Melrose football team in the team’s Middlesex League opener, and fell at 28-13 at Victory Field on Friday night. 

Both teams came off superb seasons a year ago, with Melrose winning the Div. 4 Super Bowl champion and Watertown winning the Div. 5 North Section championship. The Raiders, however, played without senior running back Mange Camara, who was injured the previous game against Cambridge Rindge & Latin. Melrose (2-1) scored in the first quarter and held a 7-0 halftime lead.

Arlington-Watertown Girls Swimming Team Splits First Two Dual Meets

Now in its second year, the Arlington-Watertown Coop girls swimming team had a successful start to the season against Woburn, and then fell short against Belmont in the second meet of the year. The team includes athletes from both Watertown and Arlington high schools. Watertown has only four swimmers on the squad, but they made some contributions. Arlington-Watertown beat Woburn 87-83 on Sept. 7 in Woburn. In the meet, sophomore Niamh Murphy was on the first place 200 medley relay which finished in 2:07.89, and she also placed third in the 100 breaststroke (1:28.79) and fourth in the 5o0 freestyle (6:57.37).

The Raiders got off to a fast start against Cambridge Rindge & Latin, but the offense struggled after losing the team’s starting running back, and a last minute comeback attempt failed. Watertown High School fell 21-19 in the team’s home opener Friday night at Victory Field. Watertown’s senior quarterback Nick McDermott ran for two touchdowns and threw for a third, but Raiders running back Mange Camara missed much of the game with an apparent ankle injury. Last week, against Arlington Catholic, the senior scored three touchdowns. After stopping the Falcons on their first possession, Watertown (1-1) drove 96 yard and went up 7-0 when McDermott scored on a sneak.

This Is a great introduction to the game for inexperienced players looking to try it out. All players are welcome, and please bring any friends that want to try lacrosse.
