Led by Sprinter Camara WHS Track Team Takes 3rd at Div. 5 Meet, Koufos Grabs 3rd

BOSTON – Led by the junior sprinter Mange Camara’s top performance, the Watertown boys track & field team took third place at the MIAA Div. 5 Indoor Championships Thursday. Distance runner Emily Koufos excelled for the girls. With each best time in the 55 dash and the 300 meters, Camara sets a new school record. He set the record at the Coaches Invitational and then again at the Middlesex League Meet.

WHS Sports: Wrestlers Medal, Swimmers Compete at Section Meet, Track Team Heads to Div. 5 Meet

The State competitions are underway for winter sports and Watertown High School sent competitors or will have athletes competing in the boys swimming, wrestling and boys and girls indoor track championships. Wrestlers Medal at Divisional Meet
A young Watertown High School wrestling team came off a successful regular season, in which it went 18-10 in dual meets, and had five medalists at the Div. 3 Central Section meet at Wayland over the weekend. The Raiders sent competitors in all of the weight classes. Freshman Waqas Khan won third place by going 4-1 in the 113 lb.

Registration Open for Watertown Police Finish Strong 5K Run/Walk

Once again this year the Watertown Police Department will host a 5K run and walk to commemorate the anniversary of the events that led to the capture of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects. 

The Watertown Police Finish Strong 5k Run/Walk begins at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 29, 2018 starting and finishing at Tufts Health Plan 705 Mount Auburn Street in Watertown. Mission: The Watertown Police Relief Association, Watertown Supervisors Association and Watertown Patrol officers Association will commemorate the 5th anniversary of the events that led to the capture of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects by inviting the community to fill the streets of Watertown in a 5K celebratory road race and walk.Proceeds to benefit the WPRA, WPSA and the WPA. Proceeds from this event will benefit the WPSA, local charity & victim funds, One Fund, Watertown Police Foundation and the new foundation to support youth community programming and school safety initiatives

Course: The course is fast and fairly flat 3.1 miles (5k). Prizes to top male/female finishers plus various age categories. Runners and walkers welcome and for safety purposes, no skateboards, rollerblades/skates, bicycles, or animals can be taken on the course.

School Committee Looks to Change Policies on Sports Banners; Non-WHS Students Attending Dances, Events

Changes to the policies for how Watertown High School athletics banners are awarded, and for allowing non-WHS students to attend events – such as dances – are being examined by the School Committee. 

At last week’s School Committee meeting the board had first readings for the policy changes. The final votes are expected to be made at the School Committee’s March 5 meeting. Athletic Banners
The policy about when a banner goes up the gymnasium at Watertown High School is being examined because there are all several types of banners, some for teams, some for individual athletes and they are not all the same. “There is a confusion because there are inconsistencies,” said School Committee member Eileen Hsu-Balzer, who chairs the Policy Subcommittee.

WHS Sports: Raiders Claim 2 Individual League Track Titles, Wrestling Coach Wins No. 400

Watertown High School had some outstanding individual performances at the Middlesex League Indoor Track Championships in Boston this week. Senior Emily Koufos won the 2-mile run in a time of 11:28.01, more than 12.5 seconds ahead of the second place runner. The League Meet was the first time Koufos ran that distance competitvely. In her career Koufos has also won 800, the mile and in cross country. On the boys side, junior Mange Camara won the 300 meters by nearly a second.

Watertown Track Team Works Out Bodies and Minds at Local Yoga Studio

Periodically, the Watertown High School track and field team will take a break from running and hit the yoga mat as a part of their training regimen. On a January afternoon, more than a dozen members of the boys and girls track teams filtered into Artemis Yoga in Coolidge Square to work with instructor Amy Hrobak. Assistant track coach Megan Diduca first brought some of the girls track athletes over last year, and last spring she brought some of the boys track team members. “”We love it,” Diduca said. “We do extra strength training so it is not always running.

Senior Led Watertown Boys Basketball Faced Belmont Friday Night

The Raiders’ boys basketball team – led by the senior duo of John Korte and Julio Fulcar – suffered a close loss to rival Belmont Friday  night in the WHS Gym. 

Watertown lost 59-56 to the Marauders in the Middlesex League matchup. The Raiders battled back to make it close after being down 36-22 in at halftime. The team dropped to 8-5 on the season and 5-5 in the Middlesex League. The Raiders were coming off a 10 point win over Boston United earlier in the week, where senior guard Julio Fulcar scored a career high 30 points, according to Wicked Local Watertown. The team has been led this season by senior John Korte, who passed the 1,000 point mark for his career during a 27-point performance at Wilmington last week.

Watertown Track Sets Record at Coaches Div. 5 State Relay Meet

Watertown High School’s boys track team excelled at Sunday’s MSTCA Div. 5 State Relays, finishing fourth place overall and one relay setting a new Div. 5 record. The meet, held at Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Boston, featured the best teams from around Massachusetts of comparable size. The 4 x 200 relay team of Nick Cordeiro, Nathan Follett, Edie Ferreira and Mangé Camara placed first with a time of 1:35.71.
