Watertown’s Field Hockey Success Continues at Bay State Games

Watertown field hockey players continued their success over the summer at the Bay State Games, held over the weekend. 

The Raiders had players on the Gold Medal winning Metro/Northeast field hockey team, and Watertown won the High School Division 6v6 tournament at the Bay State Games. Watertown’s Catherine Connors, Ally Kennedy, Aurise Tattrie, and Ashley Shaughnessy played for the Metro/Northeast team. Over the three days of the tournament, Kennedy scored five goals and had two assists (including one in the 3-2 win over Coastal in the Gold Medal game), Connors had a goal and Tattrie had an assist. The members of the Watertown’s Bay State Games 6v6 Gold Medal winning team were: Connors, Tattrie, Kennedy, Gabby Venezia, Olivia Lampasona, Emily Campbell, Shannon Hughes and Elaine Andrade.

World Cup Final Watch Party Being Hosted by Watertown Church

Join other soccer fans in the excitement of the World Cup final on Sunday at Watertown’s Greek Church. The Taxiarchae/Archangels Greek Orthodox Church, 25 Bigelow Ave., Watertown, will host a World Cup Watch Party on Sunday, July 15, 2018 at 11 a.m.

The game between France and Croatia will be shown on a large high-definition television and the Zo food truck will serve Greek cuisine. All ages are welcome.

Retiring Watertown High Athletic Director Helped Build a Successful Program

After 11 years, Michael Lahiff will be stepping down as Athletic Director at Watertown High School at the end of June. During that time, he helped bring WHS back into a championship winning program, with athletes who are both competitive and show good sportsmanship, and with many teams lead by teacher-coaches. Lahiff retires after 39 years in education in Stoneham, Somerville and Watertown. He spent the last 24 years as athletic director, first in Stoneham and then at WHS. “I was on the other end of the world for most of the rest of my career, Somerville and Stoneham twice,” Lahiff said.

Watertown Basketball Coach Hosting Basketball Camp in July

Watertown High School girl’s basketball coach Pat Ferdinand will host Mass. Hoop Academy, a basketball camp for boys and girls in grades 4 to 12. The camp will be held July 2, 3, 5 and 6, 2018 at Watertown High School. The camp staff will be Ferdinand as director, New Mission High School girls varsity coach Mitchell Hercule as high school division camp director, and counselors Nicole Lanzo (WHS alum), Katelyn Rourke (WHS alum) and Maggie Mulligan (UMass Amherst alum). Register Now Open for Watertown Belmont Youth Football and Cheerleading

Watertown-Belmont Youth Football and Cheerleading is now accepting registrations for the fall 2018 season with a deadline of July 15th. Practices begin on Monday, August 6th, 2018 at Moxley Field in Watertown. Our program offers two different divisions: flag football for first and second graders, tackle football for third through eighth grade and cheerleading for all grades. Watertown’s John Korte Named North Basketball Player of the Year

Watertown High School senior John Korte collected another accolade on Sunday when he was named the North Boys Basketball Player of the Year by the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association. The MBCA players of the year are named in each section (North, South, Central and West) for both boys and girls. The honorees are selected from players from all divisions. Watertown competes in MIAA’s Div. 3.

WHS Sports: Baseball and Softball Compete in State Tournament

Two Watertown High School teams took the diamond Friday in first game of the MIAA State Tournament game, one at home and one on the road. Baseball

The Raiders came up against Newburyport’s tough left-handed pitcher Casey McLaren, who blanked 17th seeded Watertown, 3-0, in Friday’s Div. 3 North preliminary round game. Watertown senior right fielder Wenston Rodriguez got the team’s lone hit. The Raiders also got a walk.

WHS Sports: Raiders Spring into State Tournament in Multiple Sports

Watertown High School’s athletic successes continued into the spring season, with four teams earning spots in the state tournament. 

Softball

The Raiders’ softball squad will host a home game in the MIAA Div. 3 North Tournament. Coming in with a record of 12-8, Watertown earned the 12th seed and will host Winthrop at Hosmer Field in a preliminary round game on Friday at 4 p.m.

The team enters the tourney on a hot streak. After tough first half of the year, the Raiders won 9 of their last 11. The winner of Friday’s game will take on No.
