UPDATED: Watertown Basketball Fights Off St. Mary’s to Win Section Title

LOWELL -Watertown fought off a tough St. Mary’s team and foul trouble to claim the a 44-36 win and the North Section boys basketball title for the second year win a row, Saturday afternoon. The second half of the MIAA Div. 3 North final at Tsongas Arena started like a dream for the Raiders, who went on an 11 point run to lead 21-11. However, when Watertown star seniors center John Korte and Guard Julio Fulcar went to the bench with four fouls each the Spartans closed the gap to one point early in the final quarter.

Watertown Cruises Past Pentucket to Win North Section Semifinal

WAKEFIELD – Watertown High School’s boys basketball team will return to the North Section final for the 11th time under Head Coach Steve Harrington after beating Pentucket 55-33 Tuesday night. The Raiders hit from inside and out and hounded the Sachems on defense. Watertown’s top scorer Tuesday, senior center John Korte, said that offensive game plan unfolded like they practiced. He scored 25 points with hoops from in close, as well as from behind the three point line. “We knew that their were holes in their zone and a lot of easy driving lanes,” Korte said.

Watertown Rolls Past Lynnfield in North Section Basketball Quarterfinal

LYNNFIELD – The Raiders went into a hostile and steamy gym at Lynnfield High School for Saturday’s Div. 3 North boys basketball quarterfinal and made it look easy in a 62-44 victory over the hosts, despite being a much lower seed. 

Leading Watertown on both sides of the ball was senior guard Julio Fulcar, who was the team’s high scorer and had the assignment to guard Lynnfield’s best player, point guard Billy Arseneault.

Watertown head basketball coach Steve Harrington knew that the Pioneers wanted to run the ball. “They’re ability to run starts with the point guard,” Harrington said. “Fulcar – never mind his 31 or whatever [he finished with 32 points] – his job on defense was knowing where (Arsenault) was at all times.” The No.

Registration is now open for a baseball program in Watertown for children with special needs that begins in the spring. Organizers sent out the following announcement:

The Watertown Challenger Division, sponsored by Mount Auburn Hospital, is a division of Little League baseball especially designed for boys and girls ages 8-22 with special needs. Join us in our sixth year of providing this wonderful opportunity for everyone to be a part of a team and community! The Challenger Division program is dedicated to providing children of varying experiences and abilities to have fun learning to play baseball while also providing a chance to be part of a team in their community! Along with their baseball skills, all children will work on social pragmatics, team collaboration, and much more!

Watertown Basketball Team Dominates in First Round State Tourney Win

The Watertown High School boys basketball team came out for warmups for the first round State Tournament game Tuesday night wearing shirts emblazoned with “#SLEEPER.” After the 77-32 win over Essex Tech, however, it will hard for opponents not to take notice of the Raiders. 

Senior center John Korte said the shirts were inspired by Boston Herald high school sports writer Danny Ventura, who called the Raiders a sleeper in the MIAA Div. 3 North bracket. “It was kind of a fireback, because we think we are the best team in D3 North and we wanted to show that, like we did tonight,” Korte said. “And, also, I feel like outside Watertown people don’t really believe in us to be able to go very far –especially with the seventh seed.”

Watertown Runner Shows He can Compete With the Best in Massachusetts

Watertown junior sprinter Mange Camara ran against the best high school competition Saturday in the All-State Meet and showed he was among the elite. In the 55-meter dash Camara got to the finals at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center. He ran a 6.65, which got him eight place. He was a little off his personal best and school record time of 6.58, last week at the Div. 5 Meet.

Watertown Boys Basketball Team Grabs Home Game in First Round of State Tourney

As Watertown High School’s boys basketball team tries to return to the State Semifinal for a second straight year, the Raiders will host a first round game in the MIAA State Tournament on Tuesday. 

The Raiders, who finished 14-6, earned the seventh seed in the Div. 3 North Section bracket, which was released Friday. Watertown will host 10th seed Essex Tech (10-10) at 7 p.m. on Feb. 27. The winner of the Watertown-Essex Tech game will likely face second seeded Lynnfield (17-3), which takes on Swampscott in the first round.

Watertown Boys Hoops Team Waits for State Tourney Seed After 46-Point Win

Senior center John Korte scored 34 points for the Raiders in just three quarters to lead the Watertown High School boys basketball team to an 81-35 victory over visiting Boston United on Tuesday afternoon. The Raiders now await the release of the MIAA tournament brackets to see if they can make another deep run in the Div. 3 playoffs. With the win, Watertown finished the regular season with a 14-6 record. The team has won three straight and six out of the last seven, giving head coach Steve Harrington somethings to be optimistic about.
