Watertown Field Hockey Holds On to Early Lead to Win State Semifinal

BRAINTREE – Dennis-Yarmouth gave the Watertown High School field hockey team a run for their money, but the Raiders made an early goal stick as they won 1-0 the State Semifinal and are on their way to their ninth straight MIAA Div. 2 State Final. From the first whistle, the Dolphins showed they could threaten the Watertown net, and had two early corners, but the Raiders took the ball down the the field and senior Sydney Poulin got the space she needed to put the ball in the back of the D-Y net 5 minutes into the game. “(Poulin) just kept staying with the play and found her opening. It’s nice to get that early and to hang on,” said Watertown field hockey coach Eileen Donahue.

See What Mascot the School Committee Chose to Represent Watertown High School

The School Committee selected Watertown High School’s new mascot, or logo: a shield with a large W and Raiders written across it. The Committee unanimously chose the shield from the four concepts brought forward by the Watertown High School Mascot Screening Committee in October. Other ideas were a knight on a horse, a knight behind a shield and a knight’s helmet. Town Council President Mark Sideris proposed that the shield be the choice. “We’re not going to make everybody happy tonight, so we have to make the decision that is best for the Watertown Schools,” Sideris said.

Three Raiders Sign Letters to Continue Playing Sport in College

Three outstanding Watertown High School athletes made it official Monday, they will be taking their game to the next level. Two field hockey player and a track and cross country runner signed their letters of intent during a ceremony in the Watertown High School Gym. Jonna Kennedy
Watertown’s field hockey goalie Jonna Kennedy will be playing for Boston College next year. She has been part of three state championships and hopes to win another one this week. Watertown field hockey coach Eileen Donahue said her goalie played both for the varsity and JV her freshman year. Sometimes playing with such a talented team in front of her can mean little action, but Kennedy responds when called upon.

Watertown Takes Down Melrose to Win North Section Soccer Title

LYNN – Watertown’s opponent in the North Section final was a very familiar foe, and after losing a game that decided the league title, coach Frank Cacia told his team they could not lose another game and title to Melrose. 

Sunday evening, Watertown senior Mehmet Yagcioglu broke the deadlock with 21 minutes left of the North Section final at Manning Field, and sent the Raiders on to to the State Semifinal with a 2-0 victory. “I knew I had to fake the goalie because I saw him coming out,” Yagcioglu said. “And that was my weak foot.” Cacia said he changed his strategy in the second half to send more players into the attack, and have midfielders make runs into the Melrose penalty box.

Watertown High School athletes are competing in the post-season, and not just for team sports. 
Cross Country
Emily Koufos competed against the top runners in schools of Watertown’s size in the Div. 5 Eastern State Championships and finished in fourth place. The performance came on the heels of winning the Middlesex League meet. The WHS senior ran a time of 19:11.95 over the 5K course at the Wrentham Developmental Center on Saturday.

Late Goal Propels Watertown Field Hockey to 10th Straight North Title

NORTH ANDOVER – A late strike by senior Sydney Poulin gave the Watertown High School field hockey team the 1-0 victory over Manchester-Essex and clinched the team’s 1oth straight North Section title Saturday afternoon. The Div. 2 North Section final, played in frigid temperatures at North Andover High School, remained up in the air late into the game. Watertown (20-1) had controlled play the first half and most of the second half, but Manchester-Essex (19-1-1) junior goalie Christina Calandra made several saves. In the last 10 minutes of the game Manchester-Essex got a series of corners and seemed to be controlling the tempo of the game. Raiders goalie Jonna Kennedy did not have to make many saves, but the ones she did were under pressure, and late.

NORTH CHAMPS!: Two Late Scores Push Raiders Past Lynnfield in Section Final

The Watertown High School football team officially became the Cardiac Kids with a third straight late comeback win in an MIAA State Tournament game. Friday night The Raiders scored two touchdowns in less that two minutes to defeat Lynnfield 38-34 in the Section Final and grab the North Section title. Watertown (6-4) held a 10 point lead with three minutes left in the first half, but the host and top-seeded Pioneers (8-2) rallied for three straight touchdowns to go up 28-17 with 4:44 left in the third quarter. The Raiders got back within four late in the third quarter when senior receiver Conor Kennelly caught a 19-yard touchdown. The Pioneers went up by 10 points with 2:55 left in the fourth quarter when Leo Quinn ran for a 18-yard touchdown, but Watertown blocked the extra point.

Watertown Soccer Takes Down Defending Champs, Heading to North Final

WOBURN – Playing most of the game a man down, the Watertown High School boys soccer team was able to find off the attacks of the defending state champions and win the Div. 3 North Section semifinal in a penalty shootout, Wednesday night. The top-seeded Warriors (11-2-5) pushed the ball up most of the first half of the game at Woburn High School and had some good scoring opportunities, but they were turned away by senior goalie Sergio Salas. “He had some huge saves in the first half,” said Watertown soccer coach Frank Cacia. “That’s what senior leaders do.”
