Watertown Field Hockey Team Makes Section Final After Shutout Win

Three Raiders scored in Watertown High School’s victory over Wilmington in the Div. 2 North Section field hockey semifinal on Tuesday, propelling the team into the North Final. 

Senior Sydney Poulin and sophomore Allison Kennedy each scored in the first half of the game at Reading High School. In the second half  junior Gabby Venezia finished off scoring in the 3-0 victory. With the win, second-seeded Watertown (19-1) moves on to the North Section final to take on top-seeded Manchester-Essex (19-0-1) at North Andover High School on Saturday at 11 a.m.

The team seeks its 10th-straight North title and its ninth-straight state title. The last time Watertown faced Manchester-Essex, in 2015, the section title was also on the line, and Raiders won 4-0.

WHS Sports: Soccer Team Triumphs in OT, Field Hockey & Football Ready for Next Round

The Watertown boys soccer team defeated Bedford in overtime at Victory Field on Monday night to move on to the Div. 3 North Section semifinals. The fifth-seeded Raiders (13-6-1) found themselves behind in the first half of the Section quarterfinal when the 13th-seeded Buccaneers (7-11-2) scored just a few minutes into the game. Watertown’s Robert Danielian tied the score with a goal in the ninth minute. Danielian struck again late in the first half to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead.

Watertown Shuts Out Swampscott in Field Hockey Section Quarterfinal

Watertown High School kicked off the quest for a ninth straight MIAA field hockey championship by shutting out Swampscott, 3-0, Friday afternoon at Victory Field. It took more a quarter hour of the North Section quarterfinal for the Raiders (18-1) to solve a pesky Big Blue (11-6-3) defense. Watertown sophomore Brianna Williams scored 15:28 into the game off a feed inside the circle from senior co-captain Sydney Poulin. Four minutes into the second half, junior Olivia Lampasona blasted a ball into the Swampscott net from the right side of the circle. Senior Lauren Petrillo finished Watertown’s scoring when her shot struck a stick and looped over the head of the Swampscott goalie with under 4 minutes left in the game.

Watertown Boys Soccer Hosting First Round Game in State Tournament

The Watertown High School boys soccer team secured the fifth seed in the MIAA Div. 3 North Section bracket, and will host a first round game on Friday. 

The Raiders finished with a record of 11-6-1 and will host 12th seeded Whittier Tech (8-9) at Victory Field Friday at 7 p.m.

Watertown will seek to get out of the first round for the first time since 2014. Last year the Raiders fell 2-1 in double overtime to North Reading in the first round, and in 2015 they missed the tournament. Watertown Runner Wins Title at Middlesex League Cross Country Meet

Watertown senior Emily Koufos ran past the competition to win the Middlesex League Cross Country Meet on Monday. Koufos ran the 2.5 mile course at Woburn Country Club in a time of 14:57.60, which was 15 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. The finish was an improvement over last season when Koufos placed fifth at the Middlesex League meet. She went on to win the MIAA Div. 5 Meet, 12th at the Div.

Watertown Field Hockey Enters State Tournament as Second Seed in North

For the first time in years Watertown High School field hockey team heads into the MIAA State Tournament in the unfamiliar position of not being the top seed in the North Section. The brackets released Monday morning have Watertown seeded second, behind Manchester-Essex. The Raiders’ only blemish is a loss to Winchester, but the Hornets have no losses and just one tie. The last time Watertown was second seeded was 2009 when they also were behind Manchester. That year, the Raiders beat Manchester in the North Section final and won the State title.
