Championed Crowned in Watertown Summer Basketball League

Donohue’s Kaos and Game Creek laced up their shoes one last time this season in game three of the final round, as Donohue’s Kaos won the Papas Elite Championship over Game Creek with a final score of 53-43 on Thursday, the Recreation Department announced. At the beginning of the season it did not look too promising for Donohue’s Kaos going 1-4 from the start. It was questionable whether they would win more than one game, let alone a championship. The perennial contenders proved themselves with hard work and determination at
the half way mark of the season, as they climbed the ladder and came together as one to take home the title. The game was never in doubt for Donohue’s Kaos as they lead early on in the game by 11 points at half time.

2 Watertown Summer Basketball League Finals Games on Tap Thursday Night

Two games will be played in the finals of the Watertown Summer Basketball League Thursday night, with the third and decisive game of the Papas Elite League starting the action, followed by Game 1 of the O’Brien-Jerahian Legends League finals. Papas Elite League
On Tuesday, the top seed Game Creek overwhelmed Donohue’s Kaos with a score of 69-56 to force a rubber game on Thursday for the Papas Elite Championship. After leading comfortably in the early going, the offense became one dimensional and the defense porous as the undermanned yet motivated Game Creek dominated each play. Each possession became critical and both teams had their opportunity to seal the victory with key plays late in the game. Game Creek’s Chris Baudinet led all scorers with 21 points in the first half, while teammates Zak Ray and Nick Schmiemann scored 17 and 10 points each.

Watertown Summer Basketball Playoffs Heat Up

The finals of the Papas Elite Summer Basketball league started with a thrilling first game, while the O’Brien-Jerahian Legends semifinals provided some surprises, according to reports from Watertown Recreation. In one of the most competitive games this season, Donohue’s Kaos edged Game Creek by the score of 48-46 in Game 1 of the Papas Elite finals. Rochester graduate Seth Hauben enjoyed a monster game and led Donohue’s Kaos with a team high 21 points. Louis Dale was also a huge factor to Donohue’s Kaos’ win as he added 10 points to the final score. However, Jonah Travis was able to keep Game Creek in the game with 27 points until the final buzzer went off.

Hundreds Turn Out to Honor Memory of 2 Watertown Basketball Players

Last Thursday Aug. 4, on a beautiful summer night at Saltonstall Park in Watertown, approximately 200 current and former members of the Watertown Recreation Summer Basketball League, family and friends came to honor the memory of two recently deceased members of our league through the dedication of a granite bench named in their memory, the Recreation Department announced. David Timperio and Kenny Vincent grew up in Watertown, were long time members of the Watertown Men’s Summer Basketball League, both passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. Kenny and Dave were great family men, active in their community, well respected and well liked. Each made their mark in the Watertown Men’s Summer League for an extended time period, Kenny for the Finnegan Club and Dave for the Wire.

NBC Offering Live Descriptions of Rio Olympics for the Blind

This year’s Summer Olympics will be easier for the visually impaired to enjoy as the broadcasts will be available with detailed audio descriptions of the action. 

Kim Charlson, director of the Perkins School for the Blind’s Library, sent out information about how to access the video description. The descriptions are available for Xfinity Comcast subscribers who have SAP available devices. Go to the cable Audio settings, hit SAP language and select Video Description. NBC will have the video description on its primetime coverage of the Rio Olympics. Xfinity customers will also be able view the Opening and Closing ceremonies on demand with the descriptions the day after they air.

Several Raiders Softball Players Named to Middle Essex All-Star Team

In the midst of a successful season, several members of the Watertown Youth Softball program were named to the Middle Essex All-Star team. Eight Raiders will play in the game, representing three age groups. The players selected from the 10U Raider’s team are Katie Haley and Abigail Bass of Watertown and Anna Steffen of Belmont. The 14U squad had two selections. Representing the Raiders are Riley Doss of Watertown and Sophia Arsenault of Waltham.

Finals Set for Watertown Summer Basketball League: Donohues Kaos Club vs. Game Creek

The defending champion is out and the finals matchup is set for the Papas Elite Summer Basketball League. 

Top seed Game Time ousted the Gauchos in game three of the semi-final series of the Papas Elite League Monday night at Saltonstall Park (behind the Watertown Boys and Girls Club) with the winner advancing to the Championship Series against Donohue’s Kaos. For most of the first half, the teams were locked into a competitive close battle with multiple lead changes along the way. Unfortunately for the Gauchos, this didn’t last as the top seed launched an offensive and raced to 37-27 half time lead that it never relinquished. Led by top scorer Rob Stockwell (Bates ’07), 21 points; four threes in the first half, Game Time carried the play for the rest of the game for a well-deserved 71-48 victory. Leading scorers who contributed to the cause included; Jonah Travis (Harvard ’15) 15 points, Nick Schmiemann (Bates ’11) 11 points, and Ramon Garcia (Bates ’04) 11 points.

Fund Raising Campaign Started to Honor 2 Watertown Basketball Players

A GoFundMe campaign has been started to honor two Watertown Summer Basketball League players who died at an early age. The money would pay to purchase and install a granite bench engraved with the names of  Dave Timperio and Kenny Vincent, both of whom grew up in Watertown and were participants in the Watertown Recreation Summer Basketball League for many years. The remaining funds will be split evenly and will be given to each family for use of their choosing. Dave played for the Wire, while Kenny played for the Johnson Club, according to the campaign site. “Unfortunately, both died suddenly and tragically well before their time leaving a huge void in their family, friends and colleagues. We would like to recognize their lives and the support and participation they enjoyed in the Summer League and the many friends they made along the way,” the page said. A dedication ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, Aug.
