Watertown Football Holds Off Belmont, Clinches a Share of Middlesex Title

BELMONT – In a dual of running backs, Watertown held off a second half charge by Belmont to win the 2016 edition of the Thanksgiving Day football rivalry.

Both teams had runners who accumulated more than 200 yards and scored three touchdowns apiece, but it took a late interception for the Raiders to escape Harris Field with the win – the fifth straight in the series. Watertown football coach John Cacace praised the character of his players for coming out on top Thursday. “They are great leaders. They keep everything in perspective and the know they have to keep playing and play hard,” Cacace said. “That was a real comeback they put on there there and we responded when we needed to.”

Watertown Head Coach Patrick Ferdinand told his team to remember how they prepared for the game. “It was really about digging in and communicating defensively and being physical,” Ferdinand said. “(Belmont) did a good job early hitting stuff early on but I think we had to stay true to  what we were doing and stay in it.

Last Minute Field Goal Lifts Watertown Over Belmont on Thanksgiving

Watertown’s 24-22 win over Belmont wasn’t pretty, but a Thanksgiving Day win is always satisfying.

The Raiders (7-4) let an 11 point second half lead slip away, and seemed like they were heading for defeat at their hands of their archrivals after Watertown failed to convert on fourth down and Belmont (4-7) began running out the clock. Watertown finally stopped the Marauders and got the ball back at its own 19 with 1:45 left in the fourth quarter. broadstreet.zone(17399);

Junior quarterback Deon Smith drove the Raiders to the Belmont 18. Along the way avoiding turnovers twice – first falling on his own fumble and then a Belmont defender dropped an interception in the end zone. On came Watertown kicker Conor Kennelly with 18 seconds left. He split the uprights and had plenty of length to spare.

Watertown High School’s football players started the Thanksgiving feast early by rolling out to a quick lead over rival Belmont and never looking back. Watertown ran the ball all game, often ripping off five yards or more at a time, despite a snow-covered Harris Field in Belmont. The Raiders prevailed 34-13. “I really think the game was controlled up front at the line of scrimmage especially with the snowy conditions,” said Watertown Coach John Cacace. “Since the weekend when we got the forecast we knew it was going to be sloppy.
